Daphne Rubin-Vega & Wood Harris Round Out Starring Cast Of "Streetcar Named Desire" Revival

Hot off the presses… from my inbox:

Stephen Byrd and Alia Jones are proud to announce that the role of “Stella” will be played by two-time Tony Nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega and the role of “Mitch” will be played by Wood Harris, in the upcoming Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire directed by Emily Mann. They will join Blair Underwood as “Stanley” and Nicole Ari Parker as “Blanche”. This production is slated to hit the boards, Spring, 2012. Theatre TBA.

So, that just about rounds out the core cast, though there are several other roles in the play.

Mr. Dawber

Daphne Rubin-Vega and Wood Harris are both quite talented. I look forward to seeing the production next year.

In previous ones, Blanche has been older than Stella. Original Broadway version in 1947 had future Miss Daisy Jessica Tandy, born 6/7/09, as Blanche and Kim Hunter, 11/12/22, as Stella. Vivien Leigh, 11/5/13, played the older sister in 1951 film adaptation and Hunter reprised her role.

Now the actress playing Blanche is younger, albeit less than a year: Nicole Ari Parker, 10/7/70, and Rubin-Vega, 11/18/69, respectively. I wonder if the characters’ ages will follow tradition or reflect the women’s real-life ages. Or will they be fraternal twins or something? We’ll see.

Anyway, I’m curious to see how the 2012 version will come across. The whole cast of principal players is top-notch, so I have high hopes.
