Laurence Fishburne Joins "Man Of Steel" Cast To Play Perry White

Laurence Fishburne, who’ll next be seen on the big screen in Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, has signed on to play Perry White, the Daily Planet editor-in-chief in the next Superman movie, Man of Steel.

Interesting selection here. First because White has always been portrayed as, well, white! Unless I’m wrong about that, and I’m sure all you comic book aficionados will correct me if I’m wrong. So, I’m sure fanboys and girls everywhere will lament this selection the way they bemoaned the selection of Idris Elba as Heimdall in Thor.

Oh well… :)

Although it’s not what I’d call a starring role, so I won’t expect to see him hugging screen time. But Fishburne is always a presence.

The Superman reboot is being produced by Christopher Nolan, directed by Zack Snyder, and stars Henry Cavill as the titular character.

The movie isn’t expected until 2013, so we’ve got a couple of years to go.

There’s nothing really ethnic-specific about Perry White that should warrant a problem with him being played by an African American. It’s not the same thing as Idris Elba playing a Scandinavian deity or if they cast a white guy as the Black Panther.

Edited to error –

Casting with an open mind I am all for, but not swapping ethnicities. Be true to the source material and don’t insult me with a “hand me down” character.

We can be engaging as original entities.

I have to say, keep the characters as they are.

I really don’t feel a need for charity case characters.

If the character was not “black” in origin, then keep it as is. Write characters original characters within the story and give them depth.

In another post on S&A, I am all for Naomie Harris being in the Bond series, but make her character original. Don’t change the ethnicity or (gender swap) if that is the thinking.

Casting with an open mind I am all for, but swapping ethnicities, be true to the source material and don’t insult me as sort of “hand me down” character.

I wonder will we see a cameo by Keith Roberts White in this film. Since he is Perry White’s adopted black son and was pretty much the only black friend of Superman until after the Death of Superman storyline.

They are already going crazy! Check them out here. Moaning about black spidey and black perry white. Check em out here.
