Shirley Bassey Biopic In Development For BBC With Ruth Negga Starring

Dame Shirley Bassey, the songstress maybe best known for recording the theme songs to a number of early James Bond films like Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker, is getting the biopic film treatment!

However, this will be a small screen production for the BBC, to be titled Shirley Bassey: A Very British Diva.

The hour-long film will map Bassey’s rise from destitution to international stardom.

And who has been cast to play the iconic Bassey?

Brit actress of Ethiopian/irish descent Ruth Negga, whose resume includes both TV and film credits, from Misfits to Colour Me Kubrick.

The cast also includes Lesley Sharp, as Bassey’s mother and Henry Lloyd-Hughes as her manager and husband Kenneth Hume.

The completed film is scheduled to air on the BBC in the fall.

I suspect the film will include a little bit of this… (Thanks to regular S&A tipster Emmanuel):

Terence Warner.

You have to be Welsh to understand how accurate Ruth played this part……her accent was perfect her mannerisms was also those of Dame Shirley.
If you fail to see this programme in the USA.I feel for you.
Also , I have every CD Shirley has made. My favorite?
Our time is now,not some time in the future.

I look forwrd to seeing her in this. She was great in “Misfits”.

Ruth Negga is also starring in the Samuel L. Jackson film “The Samaritan”.

The programme is one part of a whole season of programmes on being Mixed Race coming this Autumn/Winter on BBC2.

That’s what I was thinking Bernard. One hour isn’t enough to do anything biographical.

Ok, we’ll probably never get to see it on this side of the pond, but a one hour biopic? Can you do justice to anybody’s life story in one hour?

Very cool. Will have to look out for this.
