French ingenue Bérénice Marlohe is the latest rumored Bond Girl for Sam Mendes’ Bond 23 (photo below). Also rumored to be in the hunt for the coveted role are Freida Pinto and Olivia Wilde. Marlohe would join Daniel Craig, Judi Dench as “M,” and Naomi Harris as Miss Moneypenny; Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes are expected to finalize negotiations to become the next Bond Villains soon. MGM’s still untitled Bond 23, written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan with a score by David Arnold, is set to start filming in Istanbul, reports MI6, in November for stateside release by Sony on November 9, 2012.

Looking to possible future Bonds, when NPR asked Idris Elba (the Brit actor well-known as Stringer Bell in HBO’s The Wire and the title role in continuing Brit psychological TV crime drama Luther) whether he’d want to follow up on Daniel Craig’s 2008 suggestion that Elba be his successor, he replied that this was “an old rumor,” continuing:

I would do it, but I don’t want to be called the first black James Bond. Do you understand what I’m saying? Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond. So if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.

A fair point, but when pressed and given a hypothetical situation if Sony called: would he take a cab to the meeting? Elba showed an exemplary understanding of 007’s character:

“I’d not only get in the cab,” he says, “but I’d take the taxi driver out of the car, hostage. The taxi, jump out while it was moving, jump onto a pedal bike that was just past the door as I got on it, and then get onto a plane — on the wing — land on top of Sony Studios, slide through the air conditioning, and land in the office…I’m never shaken or stirred.”

idris is the man i would love to see him play james bond because he is a talent actor and i believe he would bring the whole "bond" thing to a new level….idris please except the role i'll be the first at the box office to get a ticket…..much respect and love to you…it's your time now, God's got your back and many are praying for you, peace.

I think that if they had a black James Bond, nobody would care. He would still be considered James Bond and fans of the series and character would still see the movie. There of course would be concern about it from people prior to the release, but as long as the movie delivered to fans what we have come to know and love about the series, then those concerns would disappear and fans will want to see more.

My only concern is the reason behind casting James Bond a different race. Is it to just change things up a bit before James Bond goes stale? Does the studio want to show how PC they are? I don’t like messing with things in this capacity. James Bond has been portrayed since the 60’s as a white man who kills, drinks and is a womanizer…that’s the character. Although it really doesn’t matter what color he is, we have defined James Bond by these characteristics and he has become iconic…why mess with it?

If the actor were from Mars, had three eyes and was green and could convincingly play Bond, then give the man a chance. IMO, Idris Elba has more than proven he has not only the chops, but the toughness to play the role.

The sad thing is, in NYC, a cab might not even stop to pick him up.

I wish they would film in Armenia. Hollywood should make more movies there. It’s right next to Turkey. I also hope they film in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Las Vegas and include several American actors.

I’d like to see Kurt Angle and Gary Daniels as villains in this film. There would be amazing fight scenes between each of them with Daniel Craig.

Danny? I’m pretty sure that not even Rachel and his mum call him that.

I love when I hear things like “I’m not a bigot but…” or “I’m not a racist but…”

No you’re a bigot. There are no “buts” in there.

Oh c’mon a black 007 enough You got a black Moneypenny which is too much
I’m not a bigot but you got to draw the line somewhere on PC.
As far as Danny goes I wish he step down as hes ruined the series

AND Roger Deakins on camera. that’s a big deal. VERY VERY big. i think it’s Roger’s first full on action flick(well IN TIME might be the first)
