Don Cheadle Joins Denzel Washington in Robert Zemeckis Thriller "Flight"

Reuiniting for the first time after Devil In A Blue Dress, Don Cheadle joins Denzel Washington in the sky-set thriller Flight, directed by Robert Zemeckis (Castaway, Back To The Future, Forest Gump) and written by Jon Gatings.

Denzel Washington plays a pilot who is embraced as a hero after landing a damaged plane successfully. However, he faces scrutiny after an investigation could lead to evidence that he was under the influence while operating the plane. Bruce Greenwood and Kelly Reilly have also been added to the cast. Reilly plays a drug addict who befriends Washington’s character.

“Whip (Denzel) is a full blown automaton of self-destruction. Can audiences stand to see that? Can the comment[hers & his] on S&A stand to see a wonderfully truthful, powerful, NON-“POSITIVE” performance from our entertainment icon?”

I had to address that one more time and make something perfectly clear. My concerns are addressed to those who comment, they are not directed to the S&A staff. They are generally…. let me repeat that… they are “generally” impartial in their reviews of most films they highly. So again, my concerns are directed at the “talking points” of films with black USA directors and black protagonists.

re: Can the “Can the comment[his&hers;] on S&A stand to see a wonderfully truthful, powerful, NON-“POSITIVE” performance”?

!.) Well, will the director (white) be taken to the woodshed and his sexuality questioned when his film highlights real issues in our community, i.e., domestic violence, incest, drug abuse, etc.

2.) Will the aforementioned character flaws of the protagonist be minimized or highlighted and frowned upon.? Will the comments focus on “sex” that’s killing our youth through AIDS and other STD‘s, or is it “just” sex, now that the protagonist is not white? What about our fatherless youth, will that take center stage… since we‘re talking about a black man, how will sex be involved in the discussion? And btw, the director is white.

3.) Will Denzel have sex and smoke a joint with an up and coming white star? Will that issue hit the table?

Carry on :-)

“I’m interested to see what folks are going to say about this film, because the subject matter is, harsh, to say the least. He’s not just an alcoholic, Whip (Denzel) is a full blown automaton of self-destruction”

Are you serious, jug?! Just run over to all the Precious, FCG’s, The Help and Shame posts, and start copying, clipping and pasting. The focus will not be on “art”. Oh hell no, unlike the (shall not mention that movie) but the subject matter will not be minimized and rationalized as “JUST” sex “what’s the big deal”. Oh hell no, Denzel’s character’s flaws will be front and center, picked apart like he’s satan. You know what happens when the lead character is a black man, or black woman. The talking points take on a distinctly different flavor.

That’s right, copy & paste the comments from “that one movie” and compare them to a movie when the black man is the protagonist. Well, you’ll find what the Shadow already knows… most people have had a little nip and smoked a joint once in their life… so it must be all good, right? What’s the big deal, right? Riiiight, I bet it’s going be a big deal when a black man stumbles.

I’m interested to see what folks are going to say about this film, because the subject matter is, harsh, to say the least. He’s not just an alcoholic, Whip (Denzel) is a full blown automaton of self-destruction. Can audiences stand to see that? Can the commentors on S&A stand to see a wonderfully truthful, powerful, NON-“POSITIVE” performance from our entertainment icon? Coke, weed, sex, booze, Denzel is gonna do it all…& btw he saves some folks LOL

We shall see….

AsWilliams
