New Film Images Of Andrea Arnold's "Wuthering Heights"

Courtesy of Empire Online, take a look at some new impressively photographed stills from Andrea Arnold‘s Wutherine Heights; the first screen adapatation with a black Heathcliff, giving the classic Emily Brote novel a new twist. Young Cathy is played Shannon Beer and Kaya Scodelario as an adult.

The young Heathcliff is portrayed by young British actor Solomon Glave and as you should be aware by now, James Howson plays the adult Heathcliff. The film just obtained distribution through Oscilloscope Laboratories and it is set to be released sometime in 2012.

I usually ignore British period pieces but I will try to see this movie. I think it is refreshing that Arnold decided to cast black actors in the role of Heathcliff.

Bronte’s novel always described Heathcliff as a man of colour and never as white. In fact, in the novel various characters say Heathcliff was either a Lascar, or a gypsy or dark skinned. So I think Arnold’s interpretation of the film is good because she clearly is trying to bring the movie as close as possible to the way it was written.
