Richard Linklater’s “Bernie” Will Open in March

Richard Linklater's "Bernie" Will Open in March

As previously reported, Richard Linklater’s “Bernie” starring Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey and Shirley MacLaine was picked up by Millennium Films. The company’s now eyeing a March 2012 theatrical release for the comedy, which opened the 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival.

Here’s the synopsis per Millennium:

Black plays Bernie, the beloved mortician in a small Texas town. MacLaine is the town’s richest, meanest widow, and even she adores him. No one will say a bad word about Bernie—even after he commits a very nasty crime.

Eric Kohn was a fan. “With its purposefully naive sense of self-mockery, “Bernie” is a shape-shifting genre vehicle set apart from anything else in Linklater’s career,” he wrote in his review out of LAFF. “There’s a loose sensibility to this mockumentary—mysterious comedy? comedic mystery? It’s tough to categorize as anything beyond an enjoyable experience.”
