Full acquisition release follows:
MPI Media Group today announced it has acquired all North American rights to AMERICANO, a new drama starring, written and directed by actor Mathieu Demy, (the son of directing greats Agnes Varda and Jacques Demy) about the journey of a man trough his childhood memories. AMERICANO also stars Salma Hayek (Grown Ups, Frida) and two other children of world cinema icons: Chiara Mastroianni (Persepolis, Carnage), the daughter of Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni, and Geraldine Chaplin (Doctor Zhivago, Talk to Her), the daughter of Charlie Chaplin. MPI plans a spring theatrical release for the film, to be followed by release on DVD and VOD.
MPI acquired the French production immediately following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The distribution deal was negotiated by Greg Newman, Executive Vice President of MPI Media Group, and Mathieu Robinet of French distributor Bac Films.
Demy stars as Martin, a Parisian who goes to Los Angeles to settle his mother’s affairs following her death. Once in L.A., where he spent a great deal of his childhood, Martin becomes flooded with memories – and discovers through an old photograph that his mother was very close to a mysterious girl. Troubled by these memories, Martin travels to Tijuana in search of this now-grown woman named Lola (Salma Hayek) and delves into his past in an effort to find his own peace.
MPI’s Greg Newman said, “We are thrilled to acquire a film which not only has a hugely compelling storyline, but an amazing cast that resonates through cinema history. Mathieu Demy has made a remarkable first film.”
