It’s about time. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will work together again along with Casey Affleck to bring life to the story of Whitey Bulger at Warner Bros. Bulger was a New England mob boss and subsequent 16-year fugitive before being caught in Santa Monica, CA, last June. Affleck will direct as well as co-produce and co-star with Damon, who will play Bulger. Neither of the Affleck brothers’ roles are confirmed. It gets better: Boardwalk Empire writer and creator Terence Winter is writing the script, which will track the mobster’s youth in Alcatraz, his rise to the top of the crime world and his secret involvement as an FBI informant.
Affleck says, “Matt and I have been looking for something to do together for some time. We’ve heard about Whitey Bulger since we were kids, and we are excited by the prospect of putting it on screen.”
Cary Elwes’ directorial debut, Elvis & Nixon, is set to star Eric Bana as Elvis Presley. Danny Houston is in negotiations to play the other titular character, President Richard Nixon. The film will tell the story of Presley’s visit to the White House on December 21, 1970. Presley requested the meeting via letter; he wanted to meet the President to discuss being made a “Federal Agent-at-Large” for the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Elwes wrote the script with Hanala Sagal. Shooting will take place in Shreveport, LA, and Los Angeles. Michael Benarova (of Margin Call) and Holly Wiersma (Bobby) are producing, with Bana serving as executive producer.
The Akira remake is happening with Jaume Collet-Sera in the director’s chair, and Garrett Hedlund rumored to be playing Kaneda (his name was in play back in March when we learned of the project). Twitch confirms that Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham-Carter have both been offered parts in the film; Colonel and Lady Miyako, respectively. Take this as good news for Akira.
