The Occupy Wall Street movement has sparked riots in Rome, Obama speeches and protests around the country, galvanizing everyone from Michael Moore to the grandmother I spoke to randomly in a children’s playground, decrying corporate profits. Now, it looks like it might just have jump-started the career of a documentary filmmaker.
David Sauvage, who directed the first unofficial, thought it’s become official, commercial for the OWS protests (see below), will be getting his first national platform, according to Business Insider, which reports the ad is on track to be broadcast nationally, thanks to the efforts of a San Francisco-based start-up called LoudSauce, which is a sort of Kickstarter for ad campaigns.
Sauvage, who has directed “Soundcheck,” a film about music legend Bill Laswell, a segment for the film “Freakonomics,” and the documentary short “Carissa,” makes a living by directing commercials and working on docs. He wasn’t hired by anyone to do the short spot, but felt compelled to make a video after visiting the protests in Zuccotti Park, according to The Huffington Post.
Sauvage, a graduate of Columbia and UCLA, said he can barely afford rent because he spends $500 a month paying back his student loans. That money, Sauvage told HuffPo, goes to institutions the government bailed out, something he views as profoundly unfair. “It suggests that the country as a whole values its financial institutions more than education,” Sauvage said.
But if Sauvage plays his cards right, he might be able to parlay his latest commercial for some well paying jobs and a sustainable doc career. If anything good comes out of the Occupy Wall Street protests, it should, after all, be some employment.
