The European Film Academy is presenting Stephen Frears with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the December 3 event in Berlin. “They’re always nice — if you get them,” said the director of Dangerous Liaisons, High Fidelity and The Queen (trailers below). The esteemed Brit has already received a Spanish Goya, a French César and a British BAFTA. “But I’m very grateful, it’s very nice to be complimented by Europe.”

Frears remembers being there when the EFA was founded, but says:

“Of course, I’m never quite sure whether England is part of Europe. We’re divided about this and have complicated feelings. But what matters is to keep European film going! And I’m totally committed to that. Nothing else matters. If the films are good, then people will go and see them.”

Frears admits that Hollywood studio filmmaking didn’t agree with him. “I retreated from the high budgets,” he said some years back. “The art wasn’t the problem, it was the money.”
