Watch Episode 1 Of New Web Series “The Chronicles” (A Day In The Life Of A Black Actress)

Watch Episode 1 Of New Web Series "The Chronicles" (A Day In The Life Of A Black Actress)

And the web series beat goes on… I’ve got an inbox full of these, and need to unload them (I know, I’ve been slacking). Starting today, and over the next several days, I’ll sort through and post those that I think stand out above the others.

The first is from Sasha Compere, an LA-based actor/writer who recently started production on a web series called The Chronicles, which she co-wrote and co-directed along with Lauren Boumaroun.

The Chronicles follows a day in the life of a black actress (played by Sasha), as well as other characters, and gives the audience a comedic look at the ups and downs of the entertainment biz.

Sasha says she’s just getting started with it, and has produced an episode 1, which I’m sure she hopes generates some interest in further episodes.

As an aside, as I’ve said several times on S&A in the past, create your own opportunities… in short; especially if you belong to any one of several marginalized groups (ie, not white and male). The web is a viable and highly accessible frontier. Use it! If you fail, you fail. But at least make the effort; Ya never know.

All I can do is point to the success of one Issa Rae and her Awkward Black Girl series, which is doing so ridiculously well for her right now; likely beyond anything even she imagined.

Off my soapbox…

Take a look at episode 1 of Sasha Compere’s The Chronicles below, and leave your thoughts if you have any (another new web series will be posted tomorrow):

“website” should be “web series”

Looks like I have a new favorite.

@JMac – Posting a link to one’s own website is considered tacky? Thanks, bruh, good to know! :)

**makes mental note not to post link for new web series when it’s ready**

Na, Jmac. I’m not taking away from what the sister is doing. I’m just making it clear that I was one of THE FIRST web series creators ever and her show happens to have the same title as mine. I want the audience to understand that it is a new series and has no connection to mine so that it can stand on it’s own. That’s all. And providing the link was just proof so that if anyone wondered, they would know where to go to find the originator. :-)

Ha! I’m liking this as well. Looking forward to the next episode.

@Mecca-No, that was a white CD, but I have had black CD’s give direction that was definitely in the same vein LOL

And if you look at the “type” of black actors that get certain roles in all black projects, we have an idea of what “Black” Masculinity or Feminity is & what we want to put out there.

Remember, THE INKWELL was considered “weird” LOL

Ethnically ambiguous!!!! LOL I love it!!! Very true!!!

I guess she’s too young to realize the stereotype audition thing’s been done before. But cute.

you know what? This is one of the better web series I’ve seen in a minute. There are some nice lines in this. The drug dealer reading part was funny as hell.

If I were to offer a bit of criticism, I’d say take a pinch of what Miriam Ayoo said. Some of the scenes did drag. All the scenes that weren’t ‘the audition moment’ felt a tad long imo.

and a tad more plot. Is it just gonna be “lame experience, express frustration?” or will there be more to the series than that? Maybe some kind of plot where previous jokes and scenarios connect later and we see Sasha make interesting choices in this sh*tty situation.

But good work so far. I’d watch ep 2.

Okay Marquis, we’ll make sure not to watch that, lol.

Seriously though, it’s a little bit tacky to post a link to your web series when other artists email theirs for inclusion on this site and have to wait for it to be posted. Just sayin….

I applaud the work by this talented actress and her team but please make a note for people not to confuse this webseries with my original webseries created in 2007 called The Chronicles.

not feeling it yet maybe it will get better. i was thinking it was going to be like a reality show following the lead actress around.

“black CD’s do it too”

Jug, you ain’t never lied. I’ve had so many auditions like that it isn’t funny. One character was based on a real girl, and she was there eyeballing all the actresses to play her!

Needless to say, I wasn’t “gully” enough. I like this web series, but hope there is more character development coming. Good start though!

@ Jug

Did a CD actually asked you if you could “do more urban”?

I agree w/ Jmac I don’t know how all those Black actors do it. They must have a lot of guts!

@ JMac

You should read the racist isht some of these indie writer-directors create. It’s excretable (is that a word)?

Darla & Mark

Couldn’t listen to the audition all the way through, mute the sound.

Vanessa Martinez

aaawww this was funny! I liked it…btw she’s adorable. :)

I’m liking this!

“Use some of your life experience….” and she’s auditioning for an Indie director. Poor thing.

Sorry black actors/actresses but never in a million years would I even want to deal with that mess. I’d turn into a serial killer after the first day.

Miriam Ayoo

This has potential, but I was not impressed with this first episode. Most of the scenes dragged longer than need be with unnecessary dialogue ,. Also, there was not context given, so by the end, i was not emotionally attached or had any interest in any of the characters. I hope to see another episode, cause I am excited that more web series are popping up. But it needs just a lil work.

I really hope they keep this going. I’m digging the Hollywood Shuffle angle. There’s so much they could focus on that we all commiserate here about on a regular basis.

Lol Lord, why is this soooooooo accurate???

Can’t be the lead/love interest, but definitely gots to be hoe/drug dealer/baby mama….

For ANY actor or actress who is non-white, this is straight up Hollywood Shuffle. Laugh to keep from cryin’! LMAO

HAHAHAHA I actually had a CD ask “Can you do more Urban?”

*side note*-Black CD’s do it as well LOL
