Eddie Murphy Exits As Oscar Host

Eddie Murphy Exits As Oscar Host

Really Eddie? Really? All because that douche Brett Ratner had to step down thanks to a series of dumb-ass comments? This may be one of the worst career decisions you’ve made lately; worse than Norbit.

From THR:

Eddie Murphy has stepped down as host of the 84th Academy Awards telecast. The move comes a day after show producer Brett Ratner exited. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak said Wednesday in a statement, “I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well.” Commented Murphy, “First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.”

Somebody get Tyler Perry on the phone, stat! A Madea opening number could be a doozy.

Stay tuned…. or not.

Tsk, tsk. I support Eddie in his decision. Tambay, I'm kinda surprised at your response. One of the main things I learned from you is that we shouldn't wait for them to do what we need to do for ourselves. Why are we still seeking their approval? Especially when you consider that they don't even honor our humanity.

Would I have tuned in to see Eddie host? Definitely. And I certainly hope his exit is more about him leaving on his own terms and not any sort of allegiance to Crap Ratner.

Yes he's had flops and yes I do want to see him come back out with something GOOD. But he's paid for life and he felt burned after not getting the award for Dreamgirls. And considering how he's getting ALL of the blame for Tower Heist, I don't blame him.

When will we stop holding up the oscars? They rarely recognize our talent and are quick to exploit and degrade us ( I'm still nauseous from the live performance of "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp").

I think we need to HONESTLY evaluate what the Oscar really means to our community.

Ahhh or is Eddie crazy like a fox…

Well, there goes those only reason I would have considered watching the Oscars. No way I'm going to watch a bunch of smug, self-congratulatory white folks pat each other on the back for showcasing the full range of the human experience without ever showcasing the full color spectrum of the human race.

I suppose I'll come back here to find out if they use the outhouse scene from "the Help" as a clip when they announce Viola Davis's name for the "Best Actress" category. That's just how predictable Hollywood is.

The million dollar question: Who (other than Ricky Gervais, because that is almost everyone's choice) should host the Oscars?

Joseph Powell

Duncan MaNutz

Then there were Two – Just Will & Jada….Lets count the black faces in the audience.

imho: he hasn't been funny since he left snl. brett ratner is a hack, and now we know he's a bigotted hack. and the academy awards are not only a fraud, but a boring fraud.

Eddie's just showing loyalty and people reward that.

You know My kneejerk was "WTF, screw Brett" too. But then someone made this point & I had to reconsider. Eddie may be looking at it like this: I'm doing the Oscars because Brett is producer. He's a big fan & will let me do my thing, not try & force me into an "Oscar mold" (don't think there is one, just ask Franco & Hathaway from last year's mess). You go into a situation where the folks are decidedly "leery" of your hosting & the one person who seems to be on your team, rolls. Now you have NO IDEA what the new producer will bring to the table, if they'll throw you in those musical numbers (which you don't want to do) or if they even will want you. You have more money than a lil bit & it's no longer FUN. Why stay?

I was reeally excited too. They'll probably get Billy Crystal, who will be good but I won't be excited about nor will it be a "must see" night of tv.

TP? Not even in jest.

Guess I won't be watching as usual …not unless hell freezes over and Ricky Gervais hosts. Only white guy I would tune in to see despite the lack of black nominees.

Tambay, you typed the words right out of my mouth! Eddie didn't really need Ratner to host. I wonder if Eddie pulled out of a sense of loyalty (did Ratner get him the Oscar gig?) or if Eddie got "cold feet" and decided to use this opportunity to bail? His hardcore fans have been begging him to come back and do stand-up, even a special; but he complained on the Actor's Studio that it was such hard work that he didn't know when he would do it. Then here comes the Oscars–the perfect opportunity to remind folks of the brilliant comedian he really is and show people why he became famous in the first place!

Why do I feel like Kevin Hart's agent is about to get a call? And even though Tyler Perry is the running joke as a replacement, he's technically qualified: Household name, A showman, known for comedy, his movies always open big and have made hundreds of millions, Can serve as both producer and host bringing down the overall budget thus maximizing the profit. If they can manage a simulcast on TBS, it could really work out for all parties involved.

I actually was looking forward to him hosting… :-/

Wow. Not inspiring. Could've been the beginning of something new…or not. I wonder who they'll get instead? :-( Is Brett really the bees-knees or… I mean, surely there are other producers/writers who could've have gotten with Eddie and created some conscious-hilarity for the old academy dusties.

Lorraine Germanotta

This is very sad. I'm sorry to hear this but as long as he only does movies for adults from now on, it is good enough for me.
It will be interesting to see if they select one or two young rising actors to host again like last time or one or two comedians.
