HBO To End “Treme” After Season Four

HBO To End "Treme" After Season Four

O.K. I confess. I never really watched HBO’s New Orleans-set drama Treme. I tried a few times but I never got through the first 10 minutes of any episode. Don’t know why; maybe because there are no flesh-eating zombies in it, like The Walking Dead. Who knows?

The show, with an ensemble cast including Wendell Pierce, Khandi Alexander, Kim Dickens and Melissa Leo, got great reviews and loyal folllowers, but it always struggled to get ratings, never topping more than 2 million viewers collectively; That’s compared to HBO’s Boardwalk Empire; its premiere episode alone pulled in over 10 million viewers.

So, it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise when exceutive producer David Simon announced today in the New Orleans Times-Picayune that, earlier this week, he and HBO agreed to end the show after its fourth season.

It just recently started production on its third season, which means that you and I still have time to catch up on it.

Maybe they’ll bring in zombies this season.

how do you know black folks aren’t watching based on a system (neilson) that barely enters non-white homes?

the show itself is really hard to get into and stay. some parts are good while other parts are a drag on the show. the jumps from storyline to storyline and the music (sometimes ending or entering abruptly) makes it harder to care.

this would be yet another series from Simon where the critics were either late the party or outright ignored it.

I agree with Sell Out. The show is not easy or highly accessible but it is still of high quality. And i still shake my head at black folks who will complain about the lack of quality roles for black actors and actresses, but yet have no tiime for a show like “Treme” (and to be honest….no time for “The Wire” either). But we have enough time for reality shows about the Kardassians and zombie and haunted house shows in which black characters are relegated to token status. And to be clear I do watch “American Horror Story” and “The Walking Dead”, but my loyalty goes to TV series that are of high quality and have three dimensional black characters. But as long as black audiences will continue to ignore those types of shows and favor crap that you can find on BET or shows such as that Single Ladies nonsense on VH1, we will continue to be stuck with such lower level options.

Sell Out

I loved Treme – but completely realize that it’s not for everyone and maybe it’s better capping out at four seasons. It’s not a show that needs to go on forever and I can accept that its themes are ephemeral.

I have a lot of respect for the cast and crew of this series and can’t wait to see what they work on next.
