Hollywood & Crime - New Book Says Tyler Perry's Success Tied To "Secret Backroom Deals, Illicit Cash, Backstabbing"

Oh boy… what to make of this… file this one under "things that make you go hmm…" from the press release:

Touch1Media Announces the Release of a New Book: Never Would Have Made It: The Rise of Tyler Perry, The Most Powerful Entertainer in Black America, Written by Melvin Childs. A must read for Tyler Perry fans, Never Would Have Made It is the remarkable true story of success and failure, love and faith. It is a story many can identify with after being jilted in love, life, or business, following years of sacrifice for the success of others only to be cast aside, without receiving credit or reward for loyalty during hard times. In this riveting account, Childs reveals secret backroom deals, illicit cash, backstabbing, and double-dealing. This book is a portrait of human nature, big business, betrayal, and finding forgiveness.

And there's more…

Melvin Childs is a former radio executive (now promoter/producer) with several claims against Tyler Perry, including: his chance meeting with Tyler Perry, long before most of had heard of the man, that changed both of their lives forever; that they were friends before Tyler betrayed him; that he discovered Tyler Perry; that there's a different side of Tyler Perry than the image he publicly projects; that Tyler severed their relationship with no explanation and used his (Childs') original marketing blueprint to help create the framework for the future Tyler Perry Hollywood brand, despite the fact that he was a mentor, producer, and friend to Tyler Perry; that he (Childs) revolutionized the marketing format for black theater with Tyler Perry's first play; that he (Childs) made huge sacrifices with his family for Tyler Perry's sake; and of course the aforementioned secret backroom deals, illicit cash, backstabbing, and double-dealing.

Yes, this is a real book folks; I'm not making this shit up. You can buy it right now in digital format via its website; or you can wait for the hard copy which the press release says will be at retailers in January/February.

Tyler Perry will likely have to respond to this eventually, especially as news of the book spreads; I don't see how he couldn't. I'll be looking for another one of his messages to his fans via his website.

And I'm no legal expert, but I'd assume that Tyler would most certainly have grounds to sue or block the book's release if any of its content is deemed inaccurate or slanderous. There's even a trailer for the book, which I embedded below. It summarizes everything with moving images and a voiceover, including some shots of guns, bags of cash exchanging hands, blurred faces, hand shakes, and other suggested *shadiness.*

The tagline reads…

If you are a Tyler Perry fan or have been hurt by someone you believe in, then Never Would Have Made It is a must read. This book shares how faith can make you whole again.

Watch the dramatic book trailer below, which actually looks like it could be a Tyler Perry movie :) (are you buying, or selling?):

You will have your day and you to will have your SUCCESS.

Just when I thought Tyler Perry's rise to fame was unique.

Your Comment NO MATTER HOW MUCH MONEY TYLER PERRY HAS MADE ON MAKING THESE FILM AND PLAYS, THE MAN THAT HAD A HAND IN FINANCING HIS BEGININGS SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE JUST AS MUCH MONEY NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TOOK FOR HIM TO FIND A WAY. HE LIVED THE SAME TRIALS AND MILD STONES AND TOOK THE BIGGEST RISKS. IN MY OPINION MELVIN IS NOT KNOCKING TYLER PERRY FOR MAKING HIS MONEY SO WHY IS EVERYONE ALL OVER MELVIN FOR TRYING TO MAKE THE MONEY FROM THE PROJECT HIM HELPED GET OFF THE GROUND.

Melvin child's 4

I am Melvin's 12 year old son and I never knew this much about the story till now I have asked him a
Million questions but he never told me the whole story till last year when he wrote the book. It's true

Neicy

ONE MUST TAKE A BIG RISK FOR TO MAKE HUGE SACRIFICES WITH HIS FAMILY FOR THE SAKE OF A FRIEND. SO IT HAD TO BE A REASON WHY MELVIN DID IT. WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU? PERHAPS HE WANTS MORE. HOW UNCONDITIONAL IS THAT? I'M NOT CONVINCED. NOONE PUT A GUN TO MELVIN AND SAID DO THIS OR ELSE! YOU TOOK THE ACTION, NOW BE RESPONSIBLE TO HANDLE THE OUTCOME. IF MY HEART PURE, I DON'T HAVE TO TELL IT ALL. THAT'S SELFISH. BETRAYED! YOU ARE THE ONE WHO MADE THE SACRIFICES. BE MAD AT YOURSELF FOR YOUR DECISION MAKING. BRUSH IT OFF AND PAT IT DOWN BROTHER.

Everyone is tryna make money off someone else's fame. I'm struggling trying to make it, but I believe that onr day I will make it bc I have a God given talent. I wrote a movie script for one of Tyler Perry's characters & may never get it to him, but I will not try to knock him down or slander his name bc I want money or fame. The word says the love of money is the root of all evil & so many people need to be ashamed of what you say or do to get money. If you have talent just push a little harder & hope & pray you meet someone to help you get ahead & stop preying on the next man or woman bc of their success. Everyone may have been hurt by a loved one, but you get up from that & move on not wait until they accomplish goals & tey to tear them down. Get a grip people!

Wow @ ishtari I agree 250% and then some, have you ever worked in the Black film Industry making a film , well it's even worst , Black folks , it's a wrap we love trash, we adore trash and then some I am with you I don't even involve myself with Black filmmakers anymore or desire to make Black films -I make Latino Films cause they at least have some self respect and loyality to you once they know you are truthful Black folks are all about the CLIQUES -I am with you , Black folks by and large need to go back to grade school and learn what is quality and what is not. Every time I read something from Shadow and Act I get so angry I want to throw a chair out the window. I have been boycotting Black films of late small and large unless made by the Hughes Bros, Fuqua, Spike, Ava Duvernay, Steve McQueen, Julie Dash, and understand this, Black folk still get mad when a film with an all Black cast goes no where -Hollywood does not want that shit and then Black folk go crazy with anger cause the film is about nothing just with Black folk who we see 100 times or more I take my hat off to Steve McQueen -he didn't make a Black film, he didn't make a white film , he just made a film that has real life in it and if that happens to be Black folk or white folk so be it , we can't do that we have to demand an all Black cast and state with a Bold agenda a Black cast or nothing at all and then we look at the results of the film and wonder what happen. quality first Black folks -just make films take daown the agendas and the characters are Black then make them Black , but if they are Latino let them be Latino and so on , throw some European speaking characters in there cause in New York that's a reality. Be Real quality first above all else and please good story of course

I'm not a big fan of tell-all books, especially when the subject is still living, but c'mon….a "trailer"??? LOL If this was promoted as a film, with names changed, i'd probably give him more consideration. While i'm not necessarily surprised or astonished by some of his allegations, i have to put Melvin Childs into the same "Why Now?" category that i've reserved for the Herman Cain accusers. Plus, i have to wonder, if the "original marketing blueprint" was Childs' then why not just use that same blueprint to create his own empire? Why write a book telling about all he did as opposed to proving Tyler Perry wrong by being successful(or more successful) at the one thing he considers himself to be the creator of?

ishtari

The trailer isn't good. It's unprofessional. I am NOT a fan of Tyler Perry's work. I'm also not a fan of tell-all books that bash someone.

I'm going to have a rant/temper tantrum now because I'm fed up!
I'm also sick of BET, STARZ, and whatever BS is masquerading as quality programming made by Black people for Black people.
This stuff sells because people DO watch it. I've met many naysayers who vehemently claim they don't watch this crap but they do watch it. I quit the Black entertainment industry unless it involves supporting literary books. The only thing media that we do well is writing. Yes Black people make great authors and poets! Clearly we suck at film, tv shows, & music videos. Otherwise we wouldn't consistently create, promote and endorse trash.
I wish we had more Black female filmmakers (looking at you Shonda Rimes), and fewer film plots and tv shows that involve the Black church (horrible trope), Black relationships demonizing women or men (horrible trope), and street life–living in the ghetto (horrible trope) and child abuse (sick of that too). I'm done! I am so done!

When are Black people going to make films like Blade Runner, The Lord of the Rings, Titanic, Forrest Gump, Westerns, and James Bond?
The only Black films that I've truly enjoyed are The Book of Eli (Hughes Brothers and Denzel Washington), Training Day (Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington), and anything with Morgan Freeman and Will Smith. Pretty much after that I won't watch it.
I'm tired of the stereotypes in film and the finger pointing at White Hollywood and the White media. Why don't Will Smith, Oprah, Denzel Washington, and–and Cuba Gooding Junior get together and make a giant ass Black production company that could outrank and out–everything Tyler Perry (and the other crap that some other Black producers create that are based on stereotypes and tropes) can make? And no more movies about slavery unless they're biopics about little known figures like Nat Turner or Crispus Atticks. Seriously the majority of Black films just suck! *vomits in the trash bin* Sorry if someone is offended. There are exceptions and most of those are made by the Hughes Brothers and Spike Lee…they make good films. After that everything else is….. *vomits again*
We need more shows like The Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl and things that have well developed characters that ARE NOT stereotypes and tropes.
I am so done! I should just move to Norway and make Black films from there…in Scandinavia. Hire a bunch of European born Black actors and make quality films.

eshowoman

What kind of "friendship" did he and Tyler have? This has a distinct Herman Cain/ Ginger White aroma.

B4Real!

LOL! That trailer was one of the worst I've ever seen! What's this guy want from Tyler Perry NOW? If they were friends then why bring it up now. If it was business, they should have had it on paper so he could have sued Tyler a long time ago.

blaqbird

Um, not gonna respond to the mess that is that trailer, but I do have a question for Cherish:

Why can't you be that successful without making backroom deals, backstabbing, etc.? I'm confused…really. I understand that wealth makes people do shady things, but not everyone who's become wealthy stepped all over people to get there. Why can't there be integrity in making money? Just a thought.

JMac

Wow. Looks interesting. After the book, he should pen a stage play, let that run for some weeks then contact Lionsgate for a film – hopefully opened opposite a TP film (you know'd they do that too – mo' money, mo' money), then develop a tv show on BET that exposes blow by blow, day by day details of the relationship, and if Tyler Perry sues – get a reality show. The Kardashian crowd would definitely flock to see that mess. Things will be looking up for Melvin. Good Luck.

Da Truth

I can say, I personally know Melvin very well. Truth is, behind that play, he lost a lot. I mean a whole lot. Even had his family in jeopardy. And for Tyler to forget who gave him money and a place to stay when he didn't have nothing is shady. And to clown the person whom gave all to start your career and then lie to the world about how you got there, he should be exposed. So no matter if it cheesy or what it's the truth.

Neziah

One of the worst trailers I've ever seen. LOL!

"Behind every great fortune, there is a crime." -Balzac
This reminds me of that moment in Orson Welles' CITIZEN KANE when Kane found out there were people against him raising money and he said," Put me in for 100 dollars." Or that moment in Roman Polanski's film THE TENANT when he realized that," They're all in it together." I don't know what we're going to do with Tyler Perry; we can't beat him and we can't join him, but I do know that the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

@darkan "Backroom" deals or "Backdoor" deals? LOL Tyler Perry AKA "Winston Jerome". Aaron McGruder and the Boondocks definitely got right.

Akimbo

I'm disappointment. There was no mention whatsoever of the Illuminati.

Also, how can your son see you cry if he's asleep?

"Looks like it could be a Tyler Perry movie" :) LOL

The trailer is a bit cheesy.

urbanauteur

Ha! this could be a potential spike lee joint..;)

janine

funniest thing I have seen in ages.LMBAO

Cherish

Actually, I would be more interested in this book if he claimed he had an affair with Tyler and he was paid off to keep it a secret.
(and damn – why can't I create paragraphs/space between lines?)

Cherish

The trailer is ridiculous. Talk about melodrama. Good grief.

With that said, I don't necessarily believe every word of this but I wouldn't be a bit shocked or surprised. One of the most misunderstood notions most people harbor is how wealth (vast wealth I should say) is accumulated and success is achieved. No multi-millionaire or billionaire got to where they are by playing fair or doing the right thing. NO ONE, not Oprah, Tyler, Gates, Jobs, none of them. Deals were made and people got screwed/burned as they moved up the ladder to success. You can't achieve that type of success by being nice, it won't happen. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Yoga Lover

LMAO!!!!!! Really Melvin, right before dude's film comes out? You are bitter, and he's better. Good luck with that.

darkan

Wow… He probably told Tyler to give up some of that cheddar long before he with public with this book and Tyler laughed at him saying"No one is gonna believe you". This reminds me of some Big Red stuff from the Five Heartbeats! LOL. Maybe Aaron Mcgruder and the Boondocks episode got it right? Anyone?

Dee

Wait. Wait. Wait.

So it wasn't lowest common denominator writing / film-making?

Well slap my a$$ and call me Janet. (I'm a black therapist whose had a rhinoplasty to give me a cute Caucasian nose. You'd trust with your Mental health/secrets/sanity… Right?)

Lmao at this Black ass book trailer. Good God, Jesus Help Us.
