Media Watch: Google Opens Digital Music Shop

In order to compete with iTunes and Amazon, Google has boldly launched a series of music features, including a digital music downloads store, reports NYT’s Media Decoder.  This marks Google’s intention to expand as a social network and entertainment source.

Google Music already offers over 13 million songs, and as a promotion will offer freeloads from bands including the Rolling Stones, Coldplay, and Busta Rhymes. The service allows customers to store their downloads on servers, called “cloud accounts.”  Operating through the Android Market, the program will also encourage sharing between users — giving each consumer an opportunity to share one free listen on any purchased track.
