The Three Gifts of Andy Serkis: Hobbit Teaser, Caesar and Captain Haddock

Among the many things to be thankful for at this time of year, such as compelling art house films fighting for your box office dollar after a summer of mindless tent-poles (“Shame” beats “Green Lantern” any day), let us acknowledge Three Gifts from Andy Serkis for the year 2011. The first two may never get the credit they deserve, but “Hobbit” fans will be excited for the third:

  • Caesar in “The Rise of the Planet of the Apes” – Without him, this movie would not have revived the franchise, grossed $478 million worldwide, scored 82% Fresh, or made us want Apes to inherit the earth.
  • Captain Haddock in “The Adventures of Tintin” – He’s the most expressively human character by a mile in this exhausting 3-D spectacle.
  • “There will be a trailer [for “The Hobbit”] fairly soon, actually. Around Christmas time, I believe.”

Serkis tells IGN that the teaser will arrive shortly, and they are guessing it will be attached to either “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (December 16) or “The Adventure os Tintin” (December 21) – which makes more sense, since Serkis is the non-toplining star of the film. IGN has more on Serkis’ work as Second Unit Director on “The Hobbit” and on what it’s like to be shooting the 3-D films in 5k at 48 frames; “It’s unlike anything I have ever seen before.”
