Whitney Houston: “Aaliyah Was Our ‘Sparkle'”

Whitney Houston: "Aaliyah Was Our 'Sparkle'"

I don’t think I was aware of this…

not that it makes any difference now, since she died 10 years ago; but… Whitney Houston reveals in an interview with Access Hollywood that will air later this week, that she’s been wanting to do a remake of Sparkle for at least 10 years now, and, right before she died, Aaliyah was going to be Sparkle in that movie.

When we brought it to her, she was so enthusiastic about it and she wanted it, to do it so badly. She was our Sparkle. Unfortunately … it just didn’t go that way. I put it down. I said, ‘My Sparkle has gone to a better place.’ Then we just left it alone,” Whitney says.

Fast-forward to 10 years later, and Whitney is back on the project, with Jordin Sparks in the starring role this time, and Houston as mother.

Budget for Sparkle said to be $10mil A bit more than Jumping the Broom. I hope people support this movie. Looks to be good

The late E.lynn Harris was writing the Sparkle script for Aaliyah.

As Jmac said this is definitely old news but I must disagree with BlaqBird. Although I did not see Queen of the Damned I thought Aailiyah turned out a pretty honest performance in Romeo Must Die (particularly the scene where she is talking about how she and her brother scared their mother as children) In any case I think that she would only have grown and surprised many of us with her acting chops. Alas, it's been 10 years since her passing so this is all conjecture at this point. I'd like to believe she is in a much better place now. R.I.P. Aaliyah.

Old news

Hmmmm…. I was a big fan of Aaliyah as a singer, but actress???? Not so much. Her performances in Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned didn't do anything for me. They were just mediocre. Maybe with more training she could've done a decent job with Sparkle. So sad we never got to find out.

yep this is true. you would be amazed how many movie offers whitney had and even what she had in developement. I hope she does more acting and it's good to see her looking well and beautiful again.

I always said Aaliyah would've been a biiger actress than singer. RIP!

This was revealed shortly before Aaliyah's death. She even recorded a version of "Giving Up," which was actually another character's song. I believe the writer for the original's script was really excited when Aaliyah joined the cast.
