As we’ve mentioned a number of times on this site… for filmmakers chasing Hollywood dreams, one potential route to take that’s proven to be successful for a number of filmmakers in the recent past, is to consider investing in a solid high-concept or genre short film (note the bold on those 2 words) that’s preferably less than 10 minutes long, stick it up on the web, tell the whole world, and hope for the best!
Easier said than done, of course…
Today, another young upstart hits the big time.
You’ll recall the short film I posted a few weeks back, titled Rosa, from Spanish director Jesús Orellana – the one Wired magazine described as “the brief life and bloody death of a gorgeous Halle Berry-meets-Trinity-meets-Neytiri cyborg who wanders through a dystopian steampunk landscape, scanning the strange frontier for danger.“
Yes, that one. You probably watched it too.
Anywho… I wasn’t as impressed with it as some of you were; not that I hated it – it’s looks cool, and the fact that he made it for a reported $99, and it took him 1 year, is certainly impressive! I just wasn’t as *fanboy* crazy for it as others around the web were the short was posted seemed to be.
But obviously my opinions don’t matter, because today brings word that 20th Century Fox is in final negotiations to acquire the rights to the short film for Jesús Orellana to direct a live-action feature movie based on the short!
So, no animation this time; the real thing instead. Hmmm… curious.
But apparently all of this happened rather fast for the young director; he uploaded the short film on line mid-November, and by the end of the month (thanks to how much it was shared and the buzz it created) he had an agent, and a week later was in Hollywood pitching the project to studios.
Just like that… the dream for some, I’m sure.
The Hollywood Reporter says that a different writer will be hired to write the script, which will build on the storyline and the characters of the short.
The film’s offifical synopsis reads:
Rosa is an epic sci-fi short film that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all natural life has disappeared. From the destruction awakes Rosa, a cyborg deployed from the Kernel project, mankind’s last attempt to restore the earth’s ecosystem. Rosa will soon learn that she is not the only entity that has awakened and must fight for her survival.
