Listen Now! S&A Hot Topics Podcast Show ("There's Something About The Johnsons," Viola Davis and "Shame")

It’s that time…another S&A live podcast show with the crew!  As I stated before, we will not disappoint.  Here’s our Hot Topics list:

There’s Something Strange About The Johnsons.  A well done take on an over-done subject matter or a filmmaker’s attempt at controversy?  Is this short being received better by audiences because the filmmaker is white? Would the same be true if the filmmaker was black?  If you haven’t seen it, go HERE .

Viola Davis’ possible Oscar nomination.  Is it a “damned if she do, damned if she don’t” situation?  If she wins will she get the dreaded “winner’s curse”, if she loses will it be a “told you so” moment?

Shame.  Some theater’s are refusing to show the film…how will this effect the final take?  What does it mean for the future of McQueen’s films and those covering the same subject matter? Is the NC-17 a big farce and is the MPAA unjustly politicizing film ratings?

This was too good for a Sunday–lol. Just listened. Lots of great quotable comments uttered during this podcast, my favorite: "I want to play the whole range of humanity". The short film about the Johnsons came off as an engaging dark satire, in the vein of "Heathers". I do agree that satire is not for everyone.

And I think most people will agree that the majority of the backlash of Halle's portrayal and then win for Monster's Ball vs. Beharie can be summed up in one sentence… "Michael is hot, Billy was not".

For the record… Tupac was the ONLY actor/rapper to have a strong command of both crafts.

Great post!

Listening now. I always miss these. Just watched the strange thing about the johnsons. I forgot how much I liked you sergio haha so honest (man up). The short did look good. How this was supposed to be funny I still don't know. The topic is not funny. I saw your article about Viola and I was like of course they will complain. Then I sat down and tried to think of a film where she played a role that wouldn't be criticized. In Doubt she plays a mom that was allowing the priest to molest her son so he could attend a good school. I think more people will be happy. Anyways, lata
