10. HOW COME YOU NEVER GO THERE by Feist
leslie feist has one of the most pleasant voices of modern music, and this is such a catchy single.
9. SEPARATOR by Radiohead
2011 was the year i first got into radiohead, and the majority of it i spent listening to the bends & ok computer & kid A. but through my brief listenings to king of limbs, this final track was the stand-out to me.
8. SHELL GAMES by Bright Eyes
when conor sings “here it come, that heavy love” i just get a feeling inside. this song means a lot to me and i wouldn’t be able to explain why, i just applied the lyrics to my own life and i think it’s all-around very uplifting.
7. LET IT OUT by Girl Talk
i was recommended girl talk on the lost boy about a year ago, and immediately loved All Day upon downloading it. it’s a great party album and to me this track has everything to love about it.
6. BORN FREE by M.I.A.
such an empowering song. everything on M.I.A.’s Maya album is unbelievably masterful… and this is one of my favourites. the way the sounds are mixed is brilliant, and i really think she is a pop music revolutionary. romain gavras’ music video too… something else.
5. THE CITY by Patrick Wolf
i didn’t know of patrick wolf before this song. but what a great introduction. this is the happiest summer romance song. i can’t help but sing along with the chorus whenever i listen to it.
4. EMBODY by SebastiAn
for some reason earlier this year i was really into electronic music. and of all the french DJs i obsessed over, sebastiAn took the cake. this song has a great feel and beat, i can definitely associate it with certain 2011 moments, and trying to decipher the lyrics is a ton of fun.
3. VIDEO GAMES by Lana Del Rey
video games breaks my heart. there’s something unbearably beautiful about it. it gets to me.
2. IMPOSSIBLE SOUL by Sufjan Stevens
this song is 25mins and 35 seconds of genius. i can exercise to this song, cry to it, fall asleep to it. it’s perfect. “boy, we can do much more together…”
1. THE EDGE OF GLORY by Lady Gaga
my best moments of 2011 felt like this song does. it’s exploding with a sort of dreamy happiness that my year was able to muster up in occasional bouts and flashes that i will never forget. her album Born This Way is very very good, and as far i’m concerned, Lady Gaga produced the pop song of the year. my close friend and i even incorporated this song’s title into our vocabulary: when the opportunity presented itself, “are we going to the edge of glory tonight?” meant “are we going all the way to the other side, partying without regrets, feeling the rush, pushing the dangerous, etc.?” and of all the combined good and bad this past year had to offer, i feel my moments spent on the edge of glory are the ones i’ll remember and cherish most.
