Producer Neal Moritz Remaking 'Starship Troopers' For Some Reason

Neil Moritz, the man behind brainless action movies like the ‘Fast & Furious‘ franchise, “xXx,” “Stealth,” “S.W.A.T.” and lame rom-coms like “The Bounty Hunter” and “Made Of Honor” wouldn’t know an original idea if it hit him in the face. But he does know franchises and adaptations, and the man who has also put his powers behind “I Am Legend,” “The Green Hornet” and next year’s “21 Jump Street” and “Jack The Giant Killer” has found something else that needs “improving.”

Vulture reports that Moritz has tasked “Thor” and “X-Men: First Class” writers Edward Miller and Zack Stentz to write a new version of Paul Verhoeven‘s cult classic “Starship Troopers.” Not much else is known about the reboot but the big question is: why? While the original film barely broke even at the box office, it became a phenom on DVD, earning a legion of fans, while sparking two (awful) sequels. But moreover, the film was imbued with a deep satirical and political edge (it’s not every day your average sci-fi references “Triumph Of The Will” and “Why We Fight“), something that you can pretty much guarantee will be dumped from whatever Moritz is planning to do with it. We’re sure some spin will arrive about how it will be truer to Robert A. Heinlein‘s novel, which served as the source material, but there already is an adaptation of “Starship Troopers” out there guys. And it rules.

But Verhoeven’s movie came out way back in 1997 which is practically Ye Olden Tymes by Hollywood standards, so whatever right? Another bad idea and remake/reboot from Hollywood — and these guys keep wondering why the box office keeps dropping…

I'd be willing to wager that every person who is a naysayer for the remake hasn't even read the book, probably didn't even know it exists…

YES! There needs to be a remake! I loved Starship Troopers 1997 movie, but its a complete disgrace to Heinlens work and should never have even been called Starship Troopers. It did not follow the writings and thoughts of Robert Heinlen and what being a cap trooper is all about!! I hope Moritz can get passed all the nonsensical banter from the civvis! Because they obviously, as described in the book, don't give a damn as they havent even read the book! The most influential scifi book deserves a remake – and that is an absolute understatement!

Mad Max

I am of the opinion that a fresh movie made from Heinlein's book could be a great film how ever if it is just a remake of Paul Verhoeven's movie (which was great in it's own right) would be a waste of time and forever end any chance of a meaning full film to be made based off of the works of Robert Heinlein. That being said there are many great works from the man that are worthy of the silver screen such as Friday and A Stranger in a Strange Land why not give one of them a shot?

William E. Jones

ya never read the BOOK. ya probably THINK ya know Heinlein. otherwise…

Sindre Nygaard-Andersen

Yes, why? But I don't say that because I love the original. I thought it was lame when it was released, and I haven't seen it since. I love Robocop and Total Recall, so it's a mystery why I thought it was trash ( though I have read that Verhoeven was never very fond of sci-fi, so maybe he was tired of making them at this point??)

I never understood why ST was a hit, and a remake of a bad movie..? Or will this be completely different going back to the source material?

This is great news… as fun as the old movie may have been, it didn't follow the book AT ALL… hell, it didn't even get the main character's name right (at the HS exams wall in the movie, we see Rico's name as Johnathan, when in the book his name was Jaunito), nevermind taking a barely mentioned character, changing his gender, and made him a love-interest for Rico (I'm talking about Dizzy Florez… in the book Dizzy was a dude… who got dead, and that was it). As a long time fan of the book, I can say that ANY adaptation of the book that holds no connection to PV's shitacular movie (that while fun, abandoned everything that made the book worth while, and kept nothing but a war with bugs, which wasn't even the focus of the book in the first place) is more than welcome!

I am beginning to embrace these films, if for their only purpose is to force the studio Boards to depose this current batch Harvard accountants and replace them with individuals who have some idea of what makes money in the entertainment industry!

It's ripe for a remake.
