Producers Guild Announces Documentary Nominations

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has chosen its five documentary features to be voted on for best documentary. Last year, “The Kings Speech” won the PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures–the fourth year running that the Producers Guild presaged the best picture Oscar winner. Of the list below,  the films that are also on the Oscar shortlist of 15 are “Project Nim” and “Bill Cunningham New York.” The International Documentary Association awards will be announced Friday night. Stay tuned.

The nominated films, listed below in alphabetical order, are:
    •    PROJECT NIM
    •    SENNA
    •    THE UNION

Television series nominations for the Producers Guild Awards will be announced December 7, 2011. All other nominations for the 2012 Producers Guild Award categories will be announced January 3, 2012, along with the individual producers. The Producers Guild Awards will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 21, 2012, when special honors will be presented to Steven Spielberg, Leslie Moonves, Don Mischer, and Stan Lee. Producers Guild Awards co-chairs are Michael Manheim and Paula Wagner.

This awards season gets stranger. Great for Beats & Bill Cunningham as indie producing. Makes a strange group as the others feel more political for guild fiction producers: Working Title, Cameron Crowe rather than for outstanding producing on these specific documentary films. Guess is more for their body of work on fiction films? James Marsh must be the best doc director around but breaking it down Nim was pretty standard in the way it was produced and mostly all archive like Senna.
