CASTING WATCH: Hooper's 'Les Miserables' May Add Seyfried & Swift; Trending Mainstream?

While we hold high hopes for Tom Hooper's film version of "Les Miserables," we've also noted our concern. Clearly, the film's eclectic mix of talent could prove volatile. Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean), Russell Crowe (Inspector Javert), Anna Hathaway (Fantine), Helena Bonham Carter (Madame Thénardier), Sacha Baron Cohen (Monsieur Thénardier) and Eddie Redmayne (Marius) may now be joined by Amanda Seyfried (as Cosette) and Taylor Swift (as Eponine).

Hooper wants his cast singing for themselves, and there are only so many actors that can be depended on to vocally deliver. Seyfried sang her way just fine through "Mamma Mia!" and now definitely needs to stretch her acting chops. ("In Time," "Red Riding Hood," "Chloe," "Letters to Juliet" and "Dear John" weren't exactly standouts; "Mean Girls" remains her best work.) Seyfried also has the Linda Lovelace biopic in production.

Swift, meanwhile, certainly can sing and opened SNL with charm, but these casting choices suggest the film is aiming for mainstream (even tween) appeal. Word is Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood were also in the mix for Eponine. [Via TwitchFilm]
