So here's that scoop I mentioned on Facebook and Twitter last night that I'd received…
I got an email from Jimmy Jean-Louis, the star of Philippe Niang's Toussaint L'Ouverture film that got the black blogosphere uber-excited about 3 weeks ago when I posted its first trailer here on S&A, telling me that the film will make its American premiere at the upcoming Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) in Los Angeles next month!
Imagine how thrilled I was to get that email, knowing that I'd already planned to attend the PAFF, which begins on February 9th.
I couldn't share the news right away because I needed to first confirm with the PAFF that it was ok to post here, given that they haven't announced their full lineup yet.
And it was just confirmed, so here ya go :)
The screening will happen on February 12th at 6PM (a Sunday evening), so once those tickets go on sale, I suggest you pick up yours, because I expect them to fly.
This obviously means that there is a subtitled version of the film (or there will be in time for the festival), despite the fact that the trailer we shared (the only one I know currently exists) is entirely in French and not subtitled, to the dismay of many of you.
Well, here's your chance to see it folks! If you didn't already have enough of a reason to attend the PAFF this year (we've already alerted you to some of the films that are confirmed to make their world premieres there, like Sam Pollard's Slavery By Another Name, Think Like A Man, The Under Shepherd, On The Seventh Day, We The Party, and others), here's a reason!
Given reactions to the trailer, and all the emails I received asking me where and when it'll be available for stateside audiences, I expect to see some of you there next month.
As a recap Jimmy Jean-Louis stars as the title character, and he's joined by French actresses Aïssa Maïga (Paris, Je T'Aime, Bamako) as Toussaint's wife, Suzanne, and Sonia Rolland (Moloch Tropical, Midnight In Paris) as Marie-Eugénie Sonthonax, wife of abolitionist L.F. Sonthonax.
