Universal Pictures has released the first images from the reboot “Bourne Legacy”: a generic photograph of Jeremy Renner in the role of an American super-spy, and an austere poster flashing Renner’s moniker under the tagline “Prepare for the unexpected.” The upcoming rework brings back Joan Allen and Albert Finney, along with series newbies Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac, Stacy Keach and Edward Norton.
Renner isn’t replacing Matt Damon as Bourne. (Damon refused to sign on without Paul Greengrass, the director of 2004’s “The Bourne Supremacy” and 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum”). Thus long-time “Bourne” writer Tony Gilroy, who is taking on directing chores as well, penned a “sidequel,” a spin-off with Renner as an entirely new character. Renner, who scored in the latest “Mission: Impossible,” plays Aaron Cross, another enigmatic spy entangled with CIA conspiracies.
The image and the poster don’t give us much, except to confirm that this Renner maintains the intensity and stony-faced sobriety of his predecessor. Universal opens the picture August 3, 2012. [Via Hey U Guys, USA Today]
