Martin Scorsese Gets BAFTA Fellowship

Martin Scorsese Gets BAFTA Fellowship

As the Oscar campaign for “Hugo” gains steam, every bit of attention and support makes a difference. Thus it’s good news that the British Academy of Film and Television Arts is giving Martin Scorsese its annual BAFTA fellowship at the Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony, at London’s Royal Opera House, on Sunday February 12.

The Fellowship is the highest accolade bestowed upon an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film. Previously honoured Fellows include Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Sean Connery, Elizabeth Taylor, Stanley Kubrick, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Judi Dench and Vanessa Redgrave. Christopher Lee received the Fellowship at the Film Awards last February.

Martin Scorsese said: “It is a great honour to be recognized by the British Academy and to join the ranks of such an esteemed group of industry colleagues and friends.”

Scorsese’s films include “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “Casino,” “Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator” and “The Departed,” and have earned nine BAFTA nominations; “Goodfellas” won three. Scorsese has also filmed the documentaries “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan,” “Shine a Light” and “George Harrison: Living in the Material World.”

In December 2010, Scorsese was the subject of “BAFTA A Life in Pictures”: The video is available to view.

The nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards will be announced on Tuesday January 17. The February 12 ceremony, broadcast by the BBC, will be hosted by Stephen Fry.
