Natalie Portman Plans Documentary Based On Jonathan Safran Foer's 'Eating Animals'

Natalie Portman: Actress, Oscar winner, mother and vegan. That’s right, in case you weren’t aware, Portman is part of a select group of actresses that also includes Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard, that abstain of any food or product that comes from an animal. For the most part, she’s kept her dietary preferences to herself (though there was that stint on “Top Chef” a couple of years ago) but it looks like she’ll stay silent no longer.

A Natalie Portman fansite has come across an interview with author Jonathan Safran Foer from last summer for the French site Chap where he reveals that Portman is planning a documentary around his book “Eating Animals,” which she has credited with making her go vegan. “Well, Natalie Portman is going to make a movie of it. She wants to make a very personal documentary. She contacted me, she told me that she loved the book. I know her now, I will help her eventually, but it will be her vision. She’s only at the very beginning,” Foer said.

It’s unclear right now how Portman will adapt the book, but there is lots of material to explore. “Eating Animals” is a memoir about Foer’s quest to learn as much as possible about the food we put in our bodies, spurred by having to make dietary choices for his child. He visits factory farms and explores everthing from science to pop culture in how our eating habits are formed. Ultimately, Foer argues for a more sustainable, humane approach to how we eat meat. So basically, if you’re a bacon-lover, this movie might not be for you.

For now, Portman remains on baby duty, taking pretty much all of last year off (for the record, she was veggie during her pregnancy, not vegan). For now, she’s only got “Thor 2” confirmed as her next movie, but perhaps with motherhood still new, she’ll be compelled to get moving on a project that is clearly close to her heart.

The judgement of someone agreeing to star in a sequel to "Thor" is obiously flawed and that makes this non-news.

Howard isn't a vegan anymore, and Portman reverted back to vegetarianism during her pregnancy.

There are entire sites devoted to this kind of inconsequential news. I'm not proud of knowing it.

Anyway Foer's book is really good, and hopefully if she does end up making a film out of it it'll have a bit more aesthetics than, say, Forks Over Knives, and she'll have better luck than Liev Schreiber and Stephen Daldry did.

Though as a vegan myself I've found that celebrity veganism, like nearly all things related to celebrity is mostly bullshit and doesn't really impact people in any positive way, so unless the movie is a great doc in and of itself I can't imagine people giving much of a shit.

i only hope she won't repeat "eat meat is like a rape"
