NVIBC Festival 2012 - Preview Documentary "In Our Heads About Our Hair"

I haven't seen the film yet, but on watching the trailer, I suppose we could consider this a companion piece to Chris Rock's rather thin (although I'm sure well-meaning) Good Hair documentary from some years ago.

This one, titled In Our Heads About Our Hair, looks like it could be fuller and more inclusive than Rock's narrowly-structured, strictly pleasure-seeking film.

Directed by Hemamset Angaza, the 75 minute documentary will screen at the upcoming New Voices In Black Cinema Festival next month (February 16 – 20).

The film examines "with candor and humor Black women’s issues regarding hair and self-esteem, and advocates for the acceptance of all hairstyle choices," its synopsis reads.

I expect Angaza's doc will inspire impassioned conversation including all POVs, as is almost always assured to happen when its subject matter is the subject of any piece of art.

In Our Heads screens on Monday, February 20 at 2pm at BAM Rose Cinemas in Brooklyn. After the screening, a Q&A will follow with the filmmakers, moderated by AOL consumer advisor and TV spokesperson LaToya Drake.

Great! I'd love to see the natural heads have an opportunity to express themselves.

Love the upbeat, all inclusive vibe of this with these beautiful ladies with various hair textures/styles. SO glad someone got the memo to not make another gloomy doc about the state of Black women, with dirge music playing in the background.
