The CW network is said to bein final negotiations to acquire an upcoming Canadian soap opera titled The L.A. Complex (6 episodes already produced, and maybe an additional 7 later), which has drawn comparisons to another soap opera, Melrose Place, – essentially, a show revolving around the lives of a group of 20-somethings living in the same LA apartment complex, each chasing Hollywood dreams.
Canadian of Jamaican decent Benjamin Charles Watson (seated in the above photo) and LA-based Andra Fuller (standing in the photo above) are members of this international group of 20-somethings, which also stars Jonathan Patrick Moore, Cassie Steele, Joe Dinicol, and Chelan Simmons.
Benjamin Charles Watson's character is named Tariq, described as "a talented hip-hop artist from Montreal working as an intern, with a secret on the 'down-low.'"
And Andra Fuller's character is named as Kaldrick, an "extremely successful Hip-Hop artist hailing from the streets of Oakland, CA."
Oh boy… so the only 2 black characters in the cast of dream chasers, and both are rappers, one is in the closet (though they use the more pejorative 'down-low'), and the other "hails from the streets of Oakland, CA." Bring on the stereotypes.
And lemme guess, the Caucasian characters are as white as white can be, creating all kinds of cultural, and class tension between them all. I also imagine there'll be a moment when the *hard* masculine rapper from the streets discovers that the other rapper from Montreal is indeed on the 'down-low,' and there'll either be friction, or, it'll later be revealed that the rapper from the streets is also in the closet.
Obviously, I haven't seen a single episode of the show, so this is all conjecture on my part. It could actually be a really good show!
Before it heads to the USA to air on the CW network, The L.A. Complex will first make its initial run on Canadian TV (CTV) premiering on January 10th, 5 days from today.
