‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,’ ‘My Week With Marilyn Top BAFTA’s Longlist

'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,' 'My Week With Marilyn Top BAFTA's Longlist

The “Longlist” for the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2011 has been released this morning. Tomas Alfredson’s “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and Simon Curtis’s “My Week With Marilyn” jointly led the list with a whopping 16 mentions each, including picture, director and adapted screenplay. The films also took five acting mentions each, for “Tinker”‘s Gary Oldman (actor), Kathy Burke (supporting actor), Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth and John Hurt (all supporting actor) and “Marilyn”‘s Eddie Redmayne (actor), Michelle Williams (actress), Kenneth Branagh (supporting actor), Judi Dench and Zoe Wanamaker (both supporting actress).

Other films that found a considerable presence were UK bred “The Iron Lady,” “War Horse” and “We Need To Talk About Kevin” (which all — like “Tinker” and “Marilyn” — got listed in both the “best film” and “best British film” lists), as well as heavy Oscar favorites like “The Artist,” “The Descendants,” “Hugo,” “Midnight in Paris” and “Moneyball.” Darker horses like “Drive,” “The Ides of March” and “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” got boosts here with inclusions in both the best picture and best director lists.

There were definetly some major omissions. Terrance Malick’s “The Tree of Life” did not make the cut for picture or director, while one-time Oscar favorite Vanessa Redgrave was rather shockingly snubbed for her work in “Coriolanus.”

“The Long List” is the result of Round One voting by members of the Academy. The first round of voting reduces the films down to fifteen in each category. Round Two voting, which opens today, will reduce these fifteen contenders down to the five nominations in each category. The nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2010 will be announced on Tuesday January 18th. Over 6000 members of the Academy vote in the three rounds to decide the “long list,” nominations and winners.

Below is the entire list of “long lists.” Note the five contenders in each category (except best picture) marked with an asterisk indicates the top selections, and the eventual nominees often end up showing one or two variations from those. Some surprise acting contenders to receive asterisks included Eddie Marsan (“Tyrannosaur”), Philip Seymour Hoffman (“The Ides of March”), Bryce Dallas Howard (“The Help”) and Zoe Wanamaker (“My Week Wih Marilyn”).
