2012 Oscar Predictions: Best Animated Feature

2012 Oscar Predictions: Best Animated Feature

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 84th Academy Award winners through February 26th, when the winners are announced.

"Rango" is most certainly the frontrunner here, but in such a lackluster year there's room for surprise, particularly by way of two surprise European nominees, "Chico & Rita" and "A Cat in Paris." But I wouldn't bet on that scenario.

Best animated feature predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here.

The Nominees:

Chico & Rita
Kung Fu Panda 2

Puss In Boots

Shoulda been here: Puss In boots

Miguel

"Chico & Rita" will win. Good luck, Trueba & Mariscal!

ADAM

What about RIO!? Awesome movie, with awesome landscapes.

Chris O

someone told me Cars 2 shoulda won, and i told them "whatever your smoking let me have some" Cars 2 was the biggest dissapointment for animation and the first miss by Pixar, i expected alot more from Pixar

Kris Pajarito

KUNG FU PANDA 2 ALL THE WAY!!!!!

rey

chico and rita and a cat in paris i don't know if they are good but i really hate the animation looks from the 80

sCaramaNga

Rango Rango and Rango :))

Alicia Madgwick

Tintin all the way! It won in the Golden Globes, it should have won at the Oscars!

Todd

'Winnie the Pooh' and 'Tinitin' should have been here!

majid

why The Adventures of Tintin isn't there? i really got supprised !!!

Geek

Rango will for sure win, but the idiot academy left off the incredible Tintin just because they're still snooty towards motion capture. Epic fail. At least they recognized its score.

Russell

Rango is an extraordinary piece of work. From concept to animation (second to none) The film has everything going for it except that it's probably a bit too surreal (and appears refreshingly un-American with its lack of sentimentality and decidedly creepy characters) to sit comfortably with the Academy. Hope I'm wrong. This would be a thoroughly deserving winner. Can't praise it enough.

james

wat is with this this year was poor crap.. hell last year was worse. rango, kfp 2, or puss in boots deserves this one..

Wil

"Wrinkles" should be on the list!

Nima

come on guys!!! adventures of tin tin even can't be nominated for oscar. It's academy rule, animations with real actors can't be nominated for best animated feature…

Ju

A cat in Paris is incredible and shall deserve a nomination !!!

R.M

Hands Down Tintin!

TIN TIN

The Adventures of Tintin!

imwatchinu

Rango, tooooooooooo cute

Raleigh St. Clair

It would be incredibly disappointing to see Tintin win. Rango is far more original, and has much stronger characters and a better script . Tintin was was a fun experience for movie-goers, but it probably doesn't deserve the award.

Eh

I think Tintin is overrated

Lindsay

Rango was a very well developed animated film. However the story telling was completely horrible and it was designed for Depp to make a quick buck. I did not personally find it well but if it wins the Oscar it wins the Oscar (which probably will compared to other competition).

Trent

I agree with everyone on here…these films were pretty much all terrible (save Rango, I loved that one!) I think the problem with these films (and the current animation industry in America in general,) is that they don't take a chance on something NEW! Pixar, Dreamworks, etc. they always make this generic kiddie crap that by now has become stale, stale, stale. What they need to do is start making animated films that aren't necessarily for kids! Something dark, mature, or even R-rated would be really refreshing, in my opinion. Japan does it, Britain does it, France and pretty much every other country do it too, why not us?

Josh

Seriously guys Rango or titon? the story's were bad rango had good animation but com' on…

MIKE

Honestly, I'm disappointed you didn't include "Chico & Rita", which was submitted for the nomination. The film got overwhelmingly positive reviews (more than ALL of the ones listed here) and I would be shocked if it wasn't chosen for a nomination.

Martin

"Rango", 100%
"Las Aventuras de Tintin", 100%
"Arthur Christmas", 60%
"El Gato con Botas", 55%
"Kung-Fu Panda 2", 50%

Such a bummer that Happy Feet Two didn't get in but it is out of…
Tintin or Rango for sure but Arthur Christmas also has a chance.

John

rango or triton? are all of u on crack?? man oscar's are terrible.

Admral Thrawn

Since Tintin is out of the picture i think the Oscar will go to Rio or Rango because the're the only real compition this year

max

i love Rango .

Mike

Rango deserves this one! The Animation was pretty incredible!

A guy

Judging by the three most important nominations to have come out so far, Rango, Puss in Boots and Tintin are locks. The other two nods (if there are five, which there probably will be) could go to either Arthur Christmas, Cars 2 or Kung Fu Panda 2, since all of them scored two nods out of three. Rio and Winnie the Pooh are dark horses, though I guess only Winnie the Pooh has realistic chances. Happy Feet 2 and Gnomeo and Juliet have no chance at all.

Nard

Someone should update this. Cars 2 just got a Producers Guild nod, so it's probably ahead Rio.

Daniel

If you think about it, Pixar gets a nomination every year so Cars 2 Is bound to be nominated, it got an average of good reviews, it is much better than Kung fu panda 2 and by far Rango, which didn't get very good reviews at all.

Catca

Wasn't Hugo an animated film – or does it not qualify for some reason??? And by the way, TinTin is a huge smash overseas as the character is well known overseas.

AKASH

"Tintin" might not qualify because of its use of motion-capture throughout the film and the Academy will not give Dream Works a double dip in this category, and I feel that "Kung Fu Panda 2" will be chosen over "Puss in Boots" and the 5th spot will go to "Winnie the Pooh"

Nonya

The main two films competing in this category are Rango and Tin-Tin. Rango has the best critical reception between the two according to Rotten Tomatoes, earning, I think, an 87-89%. Tin-Tin has earned, I think, a 75-78%. Also, Rango has more "Best Animated Feature" awards. And besides, Tin-Tin has two sequels in the future, so it can wait. I think Winnie the Pooh is underrated. It has between a 90-93% rating, the highest of all the films there. Plus, there could be only three nominations like last year, or a foreign movie could show up like the past three years or something. Winnie the Pooh deserves more consideration, but I know it won't get it. Maybe in "Best Original Song" for "So Long". My favorite contender. You should listen to it.

Rango or Tin Tin. Hopefully Tin Tin!

Tacos In my Tummy

Nominated should be Puss in B00ts, TinTin, Rango, Arthur Christmas, and Winnie The Pooh. Happy Feet 2, Cars 2, Gnomeo & Juliet, and Rio have no chance of getting nominated

Tyler

Rango is easily the best film I have seen this year. Animation is scarily astounding (particularly when Rango and Beans are staring into distance at night time), the development and psychology of the characters are first class, and the way in which the movie pays homage to classic the western genre is something never seen before (was evident in the movie Drive but not to the same effect I believe). The latter of these couldn't help but remind me of how Chicken Run paid respect to classic convict movies such as the Great Escape.

Tin Tin was very much overrated. For what was a simple story line (which was a problem in itself), the story was irritatingly running at too fast of a pace and the drunkard of the story was wildly annoying. I do believe that it was strong year in terms of animated movies, I am not too sure what everyone else is referring to.

bob

What a terrible year for animated films… Nothing in 2011 was anywhere near the likes of. previous hits such as Up, Wall-E, Toy Story 3 or even Kung Fu Panda! I would say Rango has to be the favourite, namely because it was the only good animated film this year!!!

Joanna

Rango or TinTin,,,,,,,but I think Rango deservers it.

Daniel

I think Puss in Boots is the best animated film of the year. It has great animation, a good storyline, and a touching message.

Tim S

Visually, Tango was amazing, but I just saw Arthur Christmas and it was a welcome surprise.

Chris

Rango is not only the best animated film this year, but one of the best films released period. Tintin was overhyped and now overblown.

Ronnie D.

Just saw early screening of Tintin; it was infinite times better and more innovative than Rango – it's honestly a joke.

A. O. Zeta

Rio might not be the best animated movie this year but I think it should rank better because it teaches us to care for the environment, how to adapt, and love. For this category, Rango and The Adventures of Tintin will be head-to-head.
