2012 Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actress

2012 Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actress

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 84th Academy Award winners through February 26th, when the winners are announced.

Octavia Spencer is seems pretty darn locked in as the winner here, after taking the Golden Globe, the SAG, the Critics Choice and the BAFTA and continously offering up humble, affecting speeches. Her closest rival is "The Artist" actress Berenice Bejo, but if Bejo pulled it off it would be quite the Oscar night shocker.

Best supporting actress predictions below. Watch clips of who Press Play thinks should win in this category, and check out all predictions in all the categories here.

The Nominees:
Bérénice Bejo, The Artist
Jessica Chastain, The Help
Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids
Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs
Octavia Spencer, The Help

The Predicted Winner: Octavia Spencer, The Help
The Potential Spoiler: Bérénice Bejo, The Artist
Shoulda Been Here: Carey Mulligan, Shame

I haven't seen many of these movies yet, but I don't understand why The Help is getting as much attention as it is. In my opinion it focused too much on "getting revenge against the snobby white people" and too little on the lives of the help. I wanted to see more of their home life, I wanted Skeeter and Bryce's character (don't remember her name) to grow more. There was potential but it was not nearly as good as everyone seems to think it is. I also don't think either actress from The Help should be nominated. I didn't find their performances strong enough. Also I've seen Bridesmaids and all I can say is why was Melissa McCarthy nominated? That's like nominating Zach Galifianakis from The Hangover. (Bridesmaids was basically The Hangover for women)

For me only Janet McTeer It was the best performance of the year.

Although Octavia has won every major award until now, I actually think that this is the most tied acting category. I loved Jessica Chastain's performance in The Help and Bérénice Bejo's performance was very good, too.

Bryce Dallas Howard's performance in "The Help" was brilliant. I hated her. She did a phenomenal job.

hawaiian style

Octavia Spencer good acting but little less than Chastine and Viola Davis shoulda be here to not on the best actress categorie

I love Octavia Spencer and believe she is going to win but no one deserves this more this year then Jessica Chastine. Mabey she would have a better if she was nominated for Take Shelter or Tree of Life (which i believe to be her best preformance). But after the year she has had she deserves the oscar

bob hawk

Jessica Chastain's best performance this year (she's always good) was in TAKE SHELTER — but, comparatively, very few saw it. My first choice in this category wasn't even nominated: Carey Mulligan. Janet McTeer ALWAYS rocks (on stage or screen)!

Berenice Bejo should win this year, please someone stop the fever with the Help, it wasn't as good as everyone think, Octavia is miles away for the "best supporting actress" of the year, just compare this lady with Carey Mulligan in Shame, Charlotte Gainsbourg in Melancholia (my favorite), Vanessa Redgrave, Chastain, Bejo, McTeer, Woodley, Knightley!! every other actress gave a best performance that this actress that is best known for cameos in movies, I really like her character as a Pet Psychic in dinner for smucks (lol lol), Octavia has no future in movies, this Oscar will be wasted. Everything start with the list of the nominees, who are wrong, this should be the REAL BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Carey Mulligan – Shame
Jessica Chastain – The Three of Life
Berenice Bejo – The Artist
Janet McTeer – Albert Nobbs (the movie was bad, that's why she's not frontrunner, in any other way, she could be the winner)
Vanessa Redgrave – Coriolanus (all her dialogues are a class of literature, and Octavia talk about Crisco and her shit, don't make me laugh!!!)
If Octavia win will be the most undeserved Oscar in history (over Crash)

I hope Octavia wins. She was a refreshing surprise. In fact, it seems like that's a pattern for African American supporting actresses at the Oscars. Mo'Nique was a refreshing surprise, because she was known for her comedy. Jennifer Hudson was a refreshing surprise, because she had been on American Idol. Octavia was a refreshing surprise, because she's always overlooked in her films. I'm so happy she was finally recognized this year. Her performance was quite impressive. Jessica Chastain was also amazing, but I wanted her to get recognition for "Tree of Life". Nevertheless, she was still outstanding. Melissa McCarthy shocked the heck out of me, because I never expected an Oscar nomination for her from "Bridesmaids". She was great, but other performances this year deserved it more.

Gaspar Marino

I agree again, Carey Mulligan in my opinion gave the best supporting actress performance of 2011.
I like Jessica Chastain also for her combined work…Take Shelter, Tree of Life and The Help.

Carey Mulligan's performance in "Shame" is perfect! It really is a shame that she's being overlooked for both "Shame" and "Drive".

Carey Mulligan in Shame and Keira Knightley in A Dangerous Method should be looked at too. Both of them totally embodied their characters and made the films.

I posted my own predictions hours before the announce…some similarities, and also some differences with IW. Check and comment: http://www.mondoglam.com/2012/01/predicciones-al-oscar-2012-ultima.html

I've seen all 5 of the predicted nominees plus McTeer's performance in Albert Nobbs, which failed as a movie, her terrific performance not withstanding, my two picks are Spencer and Woodley.

Spencer provided some organic comic relief while retaining a meaningful place advancing the dramatic storyline. Her's was not a tacked on role played solely for laughs. And had it been the picture would have failed. (Greer does much the same thing, but in much less screen time BTW.)

And Woodley's performance was one of those times you file away as "the first time I saw…" performances. She was brilliant in a role that, with the sightest misstep in tone, could have undermined the film but she was spot on from beginning to end. No doubt some of that is a credit to Alexander Payne, but Shailene Woodley delivered the goods.

One last thing. Glad to see mention of Bryce Dallas Howard's performance in "The Help". She was pretty great at being pretty awful.

I liked The Artist and feel the predicted nominations are worthwhile except:
How is it possible that you can have a movie where the plot is essentially a love story between a man and a woman, yet the man is nominated for lead and the woman is nominated for supporting. It doesn't make sense. If I were a woman, I would take that as an insult.
Is this a reflection of the sexism that exists in Hollywood?

1. Jessica Chastain (for "the Help") – 2. Berenice Bejo – 3. Shailene Woodley – 4. Carey Mulligan – 5. Octavia Spencer // In that order. (Octavia won the golden globe. I think Jessica should win the oscar – she was excellent!)

One Love

I think that Octavia Spencer is the most deserving of all the nominees. However, Shailene Woodley(The Descendants) should be replace by Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs) in the top 5 pick.

Willy Wonka

And By the way……..Howard is really good at crying. I've noticed she's really good at that.

Willy Wonka

In some ways I do agree with BREN but honestly, Bryce Dallas Howard deserves a nomination for her performance more than Chastain. I think she proved herself she can play any role. But I do understand that is an opinion.

Bryce, Shailene, Octavia

I think Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs should be in list

Rick in MI

BTW, I agree with Emma Stone for a Best Actress nod… not Supporting!

Rick in MI

ANYONE/SOMEONE from "The Help" should win because this was a terrrific ensemble cast… or Shailene Woodley from "The Decdendants"… as she will one day be a star!

Willy Wonka

I totally agree with BMS. Bryce Dallas Howard needs to have some recognition for her performance.

Bryce Dallas Howard was wonderful in THE HELP. I don't understand why she has been left out of all the award nominations. Hopefully the Academy will recognize her fine work with a Best Supporting Actress nomination.

Willy Wonka

May I also add to my last statement, look at the movie cover of "The Help", look at it. Who are the FOUR actresses I said who was in the movie the most????? That's right, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, and Bryce Dallas Howard. NOT Jessica Chastain. I still dont understand why they are even considering her for an oscar she's NOT EVEN on the movie cover. Think about that!!!!

Willy Wonka

Um……I'm sorry what ever happened to Bryce Dallas Howard getting nominated for best supporting-actress???? I think she did an amazing performance and she doesn't even get any credit for it???? I like Jessica Chastain and all but……OMG she was in the movie "The Help" for what, like…40 mins. and only shown like 7 times throughout the whole film. Now Bryce, she was in it a lot. She was like in every scene pretty much. I was excited everytime she came on the screen. I havn't seen not 1 person compliment her on her performance on tv or at the awards. She deserves an oscar for her performance in "The Help". I'm just saying it's not too late for the academy award board of whatever to change there minds and take Jessica Chastain out of the category and just plop Bryce's name on there. Just because Jessica Chastain has been in 2 other movies that are good, the reason why your choosing her is just for that??? Bryce is really good at playing anything!!!! Trust me, I "DID NOT LIKE" her in "The Help"!!! She was soooo mean. So you see, I could have seen her playing the role as Celia Foote. That's because she's such a good actress, she could play the nice guy and she's good at it, and she also can play the evil villian. That is why she should be nominated. I think Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer should both be in the Best Actress Category, Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard should both be in the Best-Supporting Actress Category. Because if you notice, Those for actresses are all in the movie most of the time NOT Jessica Chastain. But DO NOT get me wrong, Jessica Chastain is a really good actress but, I think she needs to be in a few more movies and work her career up. That is why Bryce Dallas Howard should be nominated. Think about it.

Who is Judy Greer? What part did she play. Person who made this list must know her.

Jay Port

Don't rule out Gena Rowlands in the made-on-a-smartphone movie "Olive".

Melissa McCarthy's performance over Janet McTeers's???? uggg… I hope the prediction is wrong.

I'd like to see:
Berenice Bejo – The Artist
Bryce Dallas Howard – The Help
Angelica Huston – 50/50
Janet McTeer – Albert Nobbs
Octavia Spencer – The Help

Where the heck is Elizabeth Olsen? She was nominated for best actress at the Critics Choice Awards tonight, and you don't even have her in your long shots list? Shape up.

Octavia Spencer, "The Help", 100%
Berenice Bejo, "The Artist", 100%
Shailene Woodley, "The Descendants", 80%
Jessica Chastain, "The Help", 70%
Vanessa Redgrave, "Coriolanus", 60%

Shailene Woodly is really hot! I know she was in that crappy ABC Family show, but she's really a much better actress than I thought! That being said, Maggie Smith, get your ass on the Top 5 list!

Okay, okay. This might be a little ridiculous to comment on, but Judy Greer? Really? I just saw The Descendants tonight and she's in the movie for MAX 10 minutes. She did an ok job, but I really don't even think it should be considered for a long shot nomination. hahah

The one guy

Remember people. These are Oscar PREDICTIONS. It's not their opinion. These are admittedly great predictions, thought some others I wish could be nominated.

Angelica Huston, 50/50

Why is Emma Stone not getting any kind of recognition for her roll in The Help. She played her part flawlessly. Id say best actress nod if not Supporting actress!!!

Maria Tereza

To my condition would be:

Anne Hathaway – One day
Charlize Theron – Youth and adults
Glenn Close – Albert Nobbs
Meryl Streep – The Iron Lady
Viola Davis – cross Stories

My Week with Marilyn Michelle Williams …kkkkkkkkkkkkk

Octavia Spencer obviously!

i never can figure out what constitutes " supporting ". bejo was as important to
" the artist " as dujardin.

FUCK the girl in Bridesmaids, thats like nominating Zach Galifianakis for The Hangover, although he was fine. Shaileene Woodley deserves a nom more. It's kind of weird that Octavia Spencer might win an oscar, but no one else was much better. It's not much of an acting year

How is Shailene Woodley not in the top 5? She gave an amazing performance. Bryce Dallas Howard was great in The Help also, I wish she was getting more love.

Carey Mulligan>Vanessa Redgrave and Shailene Woodley>Melissa McCarthy, Shailene already got a Golden Globe nom, and has also been praised, and has a lot of noms and wins, and Carey Mulligan has also been praised with Michael Fassbender and has a WHOLE lot of nominations than the movie Corionalus. Besides, Melissa was ditched at the Golden Globes, and choosed Kristen Wiig in the Best Actress in a Comedy Or Musical, so it might ruin her chances. Anyway, Hope you get it Jessica, or Carey, or Shailene, there so pretty :D

Maggie Smith.

I think Shailene Woodley should get a nomination instead of Melissa McCarthy but i like her too.

Daniel Q

Where is Elle Fanning on this list?! I know young actresses rarly get chosen in these catorgories, but her performance in Super 8 should have gotten her a long shot mention.

I just saw The Help and thought it was a spectacular film. Much deeper and emotional then I expected. The entire ensemble was nothing short of amazing. While I haven't seen any of the other films (I do plan to), I would like to see Jessica Chastain walk away with the supporting actress Oscar for the film. Her performance was heart breaking, energetic, quite organic and unexpected. I loved her so much.

I know this doesn't even have a shot of being nominated in this category, but Sarina Farhadi is spectacular in A SEPARATION. She displays a sublety that a lot of actors twice her age can only dream of. And I didn't realize this until afterwards, but she's also the director's daughter. If the young boy in GRAN TORINO had acting chops like this, it would have been hands down a better movie. Note the scene where Clint Eastwood's character locks him in the basement…ha ha

Where is Kim Wyanas for Pirah?

C'mon! Bridesmaids will not be nominated for anything!, it's not the kind of films the Academy recognized. This is my own prediction:

Berenice Bejo – The Artist (I'm glad if she win)
Jessica Chastain – The Tree of Life (she needs to be nominated for this role if she wants to win)
Octavia Spencer – The Help (I don't know why so many attention on this acting, it's just ok!!)
Janet McTeer – Albert Nobbs (I just saw the film and she stole the show!!, a beautiful character)
Carey Mulligan – Shame (it will be a shame if she don't get the nomination, cause the voters could wait for her role in The Great Gatsby)

What do you think?

Resse Witherspoon for Water for Elephants!! WHERE IS SHE?????

Gaspar Marino

I saw Shame the other day and it would be a shame if Carey Mulligan is not nominated as best supporting actress. An excellent performance.

Melissa McCarthy will be nominated!

Excuse me, but where's Maggie Smith? She was better than Shailene Woodley.

A comedy like Bridesmaids has never been nominated, never will. (Although I love the movie) And Octavia Spencer deserves it all the way!

Bridesmaids nominated?? is the OSCARS , not the razzies.

Bridesmaids will not get nominated for anything in the Oscars.

Juha Tapani

It`s A Tie….Octavia Spencer for "The Help" and Melissa McCarthy for "Bridesmaids".
A Special Award Should Be Giving To Jessica Chastain For Truly Amazing Year In 2011 Movies. Thank You !

Why do you seem to think The Help will pull any nominations at all, much less three of the biggest? It was a very entertaining movie, but it is EXTREMELY unlikely it will be nominated for any academy awards. The only one that's at all plausible is viola davis and that would be for supporting actress, because she definitely was not the lead in that movie

Maggie Smith ? Don't hold your breath. Harry Potter will receive nothing but technical nominations.

A. O. Zeta

For this category, all my favorites are currently on the list. But, would it be possible to include Maggie Smith's performance as Prof. Minerva McGonagall in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2?
