A Viola Davis We Rarely Ever Get To See... (Pics)

I normally wouldn't bother with stuff like this, but this just had to be posted for what should be very obvious reasons.

Photos taken for a piece in the Los Angeles Times (courtesy of EverythingYNTK). No commentary necessary…

Viola you are the reason my heart will forever beat for a Black Queen. Thank you for showing the world that beauty knows no race and reminding black woman that they deserve to be praised!
– a black man

She looks like and exotic beautiful bird. Just beautiful. And that skin…flawless.

It's refreshing to see how beautiful Viola is; I saw her on I think it was the "Today" show and she was naturally beautiful. But the glamour shot is awesome too and takes the stereotypical role away…at least for a moment.

Isn't she lovely! :-)

She looks great, but looking great or stunning has never helped black actresses in Hollywood. In my opinion if you're not 'the chosen one', you're not 'the chosen one'. And that's that. No matter how good you look. Actually you're likely to get more roles if you look homely.

That's what needs to change!!

Nee Nee

WOW!!! She looks wonderful!!! I was distracted by the bad wig during her SAG acceptance speech. She has always been beautiful, but these pictures take her to another level.

Richard Carter

There's nothing like beautiful chocolate !

She is so beautiful!!!

Black beauty.

Linda Fulton

Beautiful, just beautiful……this look works for her.

WOW, is this really Viola Davis? SHe's fine as HELL!

WOW! Eye-gasm!
She's gorgeous! And her hair…..loves it!!! Her skin is so rich & radiantly beautiful! FLAWLESS!
She certainly can model — she'd be the first 45+ model in the industry!

WOW!!! Beautiful you certainly are.

Wooohooooo! Thankyou Viola for letting all the Dark cherries see naturals truly gorgeous.

Justin D.

She's so hot.

I need new words because stunning/dynamite/gorgeous/beautiful/fierce/captivating are not enough.

"This" Viola is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

I heard a white anchor woman on one of those entertainment shows say "she was so brave for taking those picture without her wig" Brave?! Its a shame that is how Hollywood's standards of beauty view being seen in your natural hair.

Wow sometimes wigs can really hurt you more than help you (no pun intended) I think she looks years younger and gorgeous as always. Her real life story is inspiring as well, I wish her all the continued success she deserves.

She looks beautiful! I always thought she was very attractive, weaves, wigs, or what have you. She looks like the star that she is!

I fell in love with Viola the first time I saw her! I have always been a fan of most of the sistas in Hollywood, but I have a special soft spot for the dark skinned sistas. Being dark chocolate myself, I was always shocked when my skin color was an issue, not from the Whites in the South but from the Blacks. Viola is not only beautiful, but intelligent and warm. Viola if you read this I LLLOVE that you used the word "Joog"(sp) on national tv! Now THAT is real!

She is serving it for the kids.

Monique Lawrence

"WOW" is right! She looks absolutely Gorgeous!

pearl cleage

beautiful woman/beautiful photos. now all we need is more films/plays where she gets to look like this while she does the amazing acting she's known for in every part!! lovely, lovely, lovely!

Viola is one of the most beautiful women in the world!!! She radiates warmth! She is enchanting! She is talented, intelligent, and amazing! I can only imagine these gorgeous photos above… posted on the walls of young girls who will dream and wonder…and hope someday to be…and look…just like her.

Simply beautiful!

Simply beautiful

Gurrrrlllllllll…is all I can say!!! This is the eptiome of beauty…In the beginning…. there was you.

Absolutely gorgeous!!!!!

Joy D. :-)

Love ur pics, beautiful inside & out… Now this is what real beauty looks like!

Kim Coles

Soooooooooooooo beautiful!

this is what i call a beautiful woman!

@INEZ I did not see this level of beauty in her past performances or even the red carpet. On the red carpet she is pretty. This spread takes things to a whole other level. I'm seeing bold, serene, sexy, classy, adventurous, flirty, glamorous,… and the natural hair is so organic and chic. We rarely get to see black women with their nature assets (natural hair and nose). So yeah..I am pleasantly surprised.

She is DIVINE!

More proof that weaves, & ridiculous wigs have an "uglyfi-ing" effect on sistas.. just let the natural beauty that you were created with shine through…

She is stunning!!!! We are beautiful people………

Cathi Young

Absolutely beautiful!!!

Anyone who couldn't see Viola's beauty before this is definitely biased. I always knew she was beautiful and that people only looked at her complexion, never fully apprecating how incredibly beautiful she is. As a dark skinned woman, I was told as a young child that "I would be pretty if I wasn't so dark". I never let this stop me and as a adult I have been acclaimed by everyone who meets me as being a beautiful woman. I have appeared in Essence Magazine and in my local newspapers more than once, recognized for not only my beauty but for my sartorial splendor as well.

Viola looks absolutely beautiful!!! I love these photos!!!

Man, she looks great without those old lady wigs! Do it Viola!

Viola who..Viola What..can somebody say …"DAMN"… beautiful black woman woman!!!
Last pic reminds me of the singer Ledisi

Nice photos and they got rid of those puffy eyes.

abosolutely stunning! too bad Hollywood will never see the beauty i see in these pics. do it, Viola!

what you say now!!

Doesn't she look absolutely stunning! And those heels….to die for min!!

WOW!!! Viola you are beautiful

I literally have tears forming. Viola!!, you are stunning!! I can't believe how hollywood can't see this!!!!! Black Beauty, hide no longer!!!

Viola is giving me Diana Ross in these photos. The 60's look fits her so well, and her hair is so beautiful! As for the wigs, well…let's be honest. She can wear whatever she likes at an award show, but has opted for wigs and style of dress that don't compliment her. So it's not just Hollywood putting her in those God-awful looks, it's her glam squad who should be fired today for letting her down the red carpet. I hope she hires he team that worked this LA Times layout, because finally she actually looks her age.

I believe it was Sergio who first posted an Essence spread with her so this is not totally shocking to me. She is simply gorgeous and regal.

Dang she is black she knock the color black out of bussness !!

naija chick

Oh wow! she looks amazing…unrecognizable
hope she wins the oscar

Geneva Girl

I didn't recognize her at first. She looks awesome, especially in the picture where she's wearing sunglasses and smiling. We never see enough of her wonderful smile.

I agree, with the comments below. She looks 10 years younger without the wigs.

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be seeing this version of Viola in a Hollywood flick anytime soon.

Absolutely gorgeous! Ditch that wig, Viola!

My goodness! She is fierce. How beautiful!!!!!

I am speechless – she is absolutely beautiful in these pictures. I am just thinking how seeing this picture will have such a postitive effect on a young African American girl in regards to what is considered beautiful. I know it took my breath away and I felt just that much more beautiful after seeing this pic!

STUN-NING. That is all.

She's SO beautiful! *wow

Absolute beauty!!!! Period.

Beauty redefined!

I hope we see her in a movie with her hair like this.
She looks delicious. I've always thought she was beautiful.

margaret hurley

This is why I quit wearing a wig. They look so fake on black women. She is beautiful without the wig. vjm

Damn! I didn't even know her hair was that short… looks amazing, Im a HUGE natural hair fan! Wish she could rock it in her movies, but Hollywood prob ain't having that shit! smh

Anthony D.

She reminds me of Ms Lauryn Hill in the first pic

Stunning…and she's 47!!! She needs to dump the weave. Her beauty shines with a short natural. They always make her look old and "Plain Jane-ish" in the movies.

We are left without words. She is giving face. Her legs are outrageous. She is such a truly, stunning woman and I will be sharing this on The Fab Girls blog! She epitomizes everything FAB!

T. G. Hebert

UTTERLY, unquestionably beautiful…STUNNING…need to see more of her like this! OFF the chart!

Holy smokes! Amazingly beautiful.

She is simply stunning!

simply beautiful.

what a natural beauty with out the additives!

Viola looks younger and sexier w/o the wigs. She serves hot love interest w/ the natural do

You could put any one of these pictures in Vogue, Vanity Fair or Elle. Especially the one with the sunglasses.

I could totally see her playing some bad assassin in a Bond movie or MI5.

Bemused Observer

Loving it….she's simply beautiful!

Is it a bird? NO. Is it a plane? NO. It's Superdiva. No doubt she has the entire package. The looks, the chops, the IT factor. To bad they cain't RECOGNIZE. Like Carolyn said I hope she gets independent and foreign film roles to showcase her full range.

Absolutely stunning…maybe she will consider more independent and foreign films that will showcase her natural beauty!

And THIS is why we need this emerging and thriving black indie film scene, so we can see what so many of our great actors + actresses across the diaspora have to offer. Simply stunning!

Chelle Barbour

OMG. I had the opportunity to meet Viola this year and thought she was absolutely stunning. Without the wig, she outrageously beautiful. Never being one to buy into the manufactured hair (i.e. braids, wigs, weaves, or perms) I can say that I prefer Ms. Davis' natural hair texture. Wow, she is definitively one hot commodity, more so than Halle Berry, Jada Pinkett, and every other light complected black woman that Hollywood perceives as "exotic". The 100 mile difference is Viola is brilliant, self assured, analytical and will not select a role that compromises her (or a black woman's) integrity. She proved that you don't have to accept roles like Monster's Ball to win an Oscar. I love this woman, and it is she who might influence Hollywood to reassess what a black beauty looks like. You're right Dianne Daniels, this beauty is fierce. Perhaps this is Viola's big reveal to fully separate her screen characters (with wigs) from the real deal. Love it.

Swank Tony

I always suspected Viola Davis had an undercover hotness thing going on. Now her pulchritude is clearly exposed and apparent in its full and regal splendor in these exhibits. Leading lady loveliness; my suspicions are confirmed. What a comely woman!

Dianne M. Daniels

Simply GORGEOUS…she looks amazing in these primarily monochrome shots – and I have to say, being napptural myself, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her hair. She looks like a different woman – a supermodel rather than the character she played in The Help. Her hair then was part of her character, and I understand the need for wigs and hairpieces to play her roles, but DANG – this is FIERCE!

Nik Grape

Gorgeous photos. Hopefully this will make her realize that she's as much of a "hot commodity" as Halle Berry and that Theron's remarks about her being "hot as shit" were bang on. She needs to stop playing the sympathy card at award-events because she doesn't have to play that card at all! It only diminishes her a little bit because it feels like she's just hungry for that Oscar and will say whatever to get it which is a shame if it's true. Great photos.

YASSS!!! She is serving pure Alek Wek in that sunglasses photo. Stunning!

Kudos to whomever put together the feature article and cover on Viola. That person or team has vision and clearly they hope to give a clue to the folks who make and cast movies. Dang, I wish I lived in the LA area because I would buy the LA Times for the collector's item magazine. I've seen pictures of Viola for the past 20 years and no picture has ever shown this side of Ms. Davis. Getting this kind of attention is definitely a benefit of a best Oscar nomination.

Oh, and Mark, the assinine [double s intended] one who made the stupid statement about
her beauty, "regardless of her hair," up yours buddy!

I just can''t believe that's her. Not that I didn't know or didn't think she was beautiful. It's just the combination of the use of black and white photography, the photograher and and Ms. Davis – that all comes together for a fantastic photo shoot. Girlfriend is looking hot and tasty. The lips, the hair, the eyes, the body, yeah – she looks magnificant!!

I've never seen her more beautiful! If only black women were free to be
themselves and to freely share our innate, God given beauty versus the
assimilation to "get by" reality. How fabulous she looks here. It's a shame
we're forced to hide such loveliness in order to uphold European beauty

Tiffany Rachann

r u kidding me? THESE ARE AMAZING!

glamma and grace. pure sophistication

She is genuinely stunning. Excellent fashion choice. Great work by the photographer.

Bklyn Negress

Stunning! Unfortunately, we'll never get to see THIS Viola in a movie.

Wow! Flawless. And this is why black women need to embrace the natural: took ten years off her. She's beautiful.

reece x

Wow, someone really need to put THIS Viola Davis in a film, in the starring role! Pure beauty!

I believe Viola Davis's career would be well served to follow Octavia Spencer's example to accept roles in foreign films.
