BET Greenlights Hour-Long Series From Mara Brock & Salim Akil Titled “Single Black Female”

BET Greenlights Hour-Long Series From Mara Brock & Salim Akil Titled "Single Black Female"

Last May we announced the mega mutil-year production deal between BET/Viacom and husband/wife team, Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, the brains behind the network’s hit series, The Game, the movie Jumping The Broom and the upcoming Sparkle remake.

The deal included a 3-year agreement, with commitments to new, original series, which means we should expect more new scripted programming from BET, courtesy of the Akils.

This morning, we’ve learned of what the next Akil/BET original scripted offering will be… it’ll be a drama series called Single Black Female.

BET has reportedly given a pilot order to what will be an hour-long series from the Akils, which will follow the professional and private family life of a black woman, who is also the host of a popular Atlanta-based talk show host.

Ok. I’m curious. So maybe it’s like a reimagining of or contemporary take on Julia? Except our “Single Black Female” in Atlanta will likely be in a higher socio-economic class.

I just hope it doesn’t go for low hanging fruit and it actually surprises us with some atypical ideas.

The fact that it’ll be an hour-long show is worth noting. How many hour-long scripted drama series does BET air, or has BET ever aired?

I’m not a fan of The Game, nor did I care all that much for Jumping The Broom, and I’ve already expressed my concerns about a Sparkle remake; BUT, I gotta give props to the Akils. They content they create may not be my cup of tea, but they’re in a rare position right now that many I’m sure covet.

No word on when we can expect to see Single Black Female, or who is being considered for the starring role.

Can someone please give Nia Long a job?

Forgot to add–It's ANOTHER black show set in Atlanta? Boo. Can somebody look outside of Fulton County for storylines for the next black show, thanks…

Good for them, but @@ the name of the show…really?

This is most definitely interesting and an opportunity of a lifetime for the Akils. Admittedly, I have high hopes for the shows they will produce and hope that they will debut high quality television for, about, and by African Americans. That one hour time slot is a huge deal! Also, lets hope the more Black producers seated in the room (Tyler Perry, Akils, Shonda) the more facets of three dimensional features for the image of African Americans will be expressed. Along with grade A talent; writers, actors, etc. I look forward to hearing more.

Here's my mock logline for Single Black Female.
"A successful, young and beautiful black woman searches for love as she struggles with loneliness and her horrible dating life filled with no good, trifling men in the big city of Atlanta. Are there any good men left? Will she ever find Mr. Right?"
Boo!!! This shit gets old…

Does this mean she'll save the melodrama for the new show and The Game can return to being a quality comedy with fun characters?

The title 'single black female' comes with a negative slant/connotation and an air of clinical…as in clinical study. Why not give the show a name as title…with a subtitle (or subtext) of single black female?

Traci R.

AAAARRRRGGGGHHH…I'm so sick of the (mainstream) media's obsession with the state of single black women. Next trend puh-lease!

Surprised no casting announced. I saw casting notices for this like a month ago & shooting is suppose to start this month.

They should hire the writers who wrote for the webseries AWKWARD BLACK GIRL. They can do a whole lot better than the crappy ones who are currently working on THE GAME or any other show currently on BET. But I doubt they would consider this.

Why do I get the feeling that Gabrielle Union or Meagan Good will star in this series
