Yep, it’s another this-guy-might-do-something story, so bear with us. We know. That being said, it involves Brad Bird, the geek fave behind “The Incredibles” and of course, the smash hit “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” And while that film is kind a bummer because it peaks right in the middle, the entire Burj Khalifa sequence was one of the best, most thrilling action sequences of the year. And so when Bird decides to show interest in a monster movie, we’re all ears.
Last summer, Robert Zemeckis came aboard the Brian Helgeland-penned “Here There Be Monsters” but it seems that last November, he quietly bowed out. Well, Vulture reports that Bird is going to eat some sandwiches and have a beer (or sit in a boardroom with bottled water) with Legendary Pictures to talk about directing the movie. It does boast a pretty interesting concept, telling the story of a disgraced British Naval officer who is hired by a rich shipping magnate to investigate the disappearance of his merchant ships in the North Atlantic, only to discover a giant sea serpent is the culprit. Watery explosions!
Of course, Bird is probably being offered all kinds of things now that ‘Ghost Protocol’ is a mega worldwide hit. But he’s also got his long-developing Earthquake drama “1906” that he wants to make, and everyone on the planet wants him to do “The Incredibles 2.” As for the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, he’s likely done with it as Tom Cruise tends to switch up directors with each outing. So just add “Here There Be Monsters” to the plate of possibilities, but we’re sure Bird will have his pick of the litter.
