Does Viola Davis Need “Passion” In Her Life?

Does Viola Davis Need "Passion" In Her Life?

Since I’ve been on a roll lately, getting people all riled up, I lie awake thinking of what kind deviltry I can inflict on you all next? And I think it may have fallen into my lap, when I read this piece from Jeff Wells on his blog today, referring to Davis’ latest choice of film roles, which I posted about last week, in the upcoming Ender’s Game and Beautiful Creatures.

He states that, so far, Davis has been playing roles that are “defined by their work – Social worker, CIA agent, bad mom, domestic maid, space engineer, nurse, policewoman… in short she’s in a rut.  What she needs, says Wells, is to play a woman defined by emotion, preferably sex and passion, and if she needs to play a role of this type, she needs to do it soon.”

Although his “brilliant” idea of having Davis playing a “sexual maid” (no doubt on a planation) as a change of pace, is moronic.

But then again… it’s Jeff Wells.

However, aside from that, I have to agree with his basic point. I would love to see her play more varied and passionate roles.

Just judging from the comments we’ve gotten in response to that fashion shoot she did for the L.A. Times Magazine, I think a lot of people would love to see her in that mold as well; and she definitely could play a role like that (not that there was any doubt that she couldn’t).

Perhaps the HBO project she’s currently developing with Dee Rees, or some other project that she needs to develop herself, will give her those opportunities.

What do you say?

This article is actually a bit sexist- which is ironic since the author actually thinks they are helping Viola and dark skinned black women. Pushing Viola or women in general into roles that are all about her beauty or sexiness is sexist. I haven't seen any of Viola's movies, but I think it is great that her roles are about her characters achievements rather than playing the girlfriend or wife.

why are peope focusing on this old woman what about kerry washington shes young and beautiful AND DARK! and talented. Why arent people pulling for her? she has a "realistic" chance of making it in hollywood and showing that dark skined blk woman can be beautiful inteligent and femmine why are people clinging to viola? Is it because she looks more like the average bw and therefore isnt a "threat?" hollywood isnt about AVERAGE folks its about FANTASY and id rather a real competition between a kerry vs charlize, natalie and angelina than viola vs who? renee and sjp who are considered the UGLYIST ww in hollywood.

Less is more, I don't understand how these Hollywood types think it's sexy showing their boobs for the world to see. Cover up and leave something to the imagination.

I say that I was having a hard time reading the post because I was distracted by the descending neckline of Viola's blouse in the photo you used. She's freaking gorgeous. Anyway, yeah she could use some more "passionate" roles.

While I do take issue with Jeff Wells at times, no doubt he's as passionate – and always on the side of richly-drawn/made characters no matter what the shade (he's championed Ms. Davis as S&A have for YEARS) – as you are Sergio. And I'm sure Ms. Davis & co are moving through this Oscar campaign with that in mind. She spoke about this – that perfect role – clearly just a couple weeks ago at a festival (S.Diego or S.Barbara?).

And I've heard and spoken and thought about this time and again: Let Ms. Davis let all hang and shake out – since Alfre W. (thanks Donna for that part, just that part) and Angela B. have had their shots – though some kind of fantasized, alternate reality story. Why not have her as a mob boss or hit woman, risking loss of a family member? Am I shaking any of us writers up to get that story written and in her hands? We got talent, resources, IMDb Pro, et al.

Viola is always the wise, knowing, empathetic person. At least in the roles I've seen her play. She is an AMAZING actress who can do anything. I don't think she should win Best Actress this year, but if she does, she ought to be getting some meatier, more diverse roles. Torri

Why are people saying that "time is running out?" What? There are love stories about older people last time I checked. smh.

Shit I'd like to see her in those roles…

I agree in a sense. I would love to see a different side of her. Given her vitae we know she is capable of becoming most characters. I think she should be queen of something. Don those outfits and that look in the LAWeekly shoot and be a character whose sexy, fierce, stunning, attractive, all of that. First recommendation? Queen of the Nile. Follow up recs: Aja, Ala, Oya, Yemayah or Mami Wata, any of those African-Goddesses, placed in a near-future, post-apocalyptic sci-fi future or a past-speculative setting. A woman of great power who exudes strength and warmth, radiates intelligence and confidence and is sexy to boot. i.e. there's a "character" waiting there in those LAWeekly photos. Draw her out. Can't wait to see!
