Minnelli, Grey, Reynolds to Attend 2012 TCM Classic Movie Festival

Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey, Debbie Reynolds and “Baby Peggy” Diana Serra Cary will be attending the 2012 TCM Classic Film Festival, scheduled to take place in Hollywood from April 12-15.  Film noir actresses Peggy Cummins, Rhonda Fleming and Marsha Hunt will also be on hand.

This year’s TCM Festival (which costs a pretty penny to attend) presents the North American premiere of a 75th anniversary restoration of Renoir’s 1937 war drama “Grand Illusion,” as well as a screening of the Douglas Fairbanks silent film, “The Thief of Bagdad,” accompanied live by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra.

The festival will kick off with a gala (and world premiere) screening of the 40th anniversary restoration of “Cabaret,” accompanied by Grey and Minnelli  (both actors took home Oscars for their turns in the 1972 musical film).  Other programming through the weekend includes an appearance by Reynolds at the premiere screening of the 60th anniversary restoration of “Singin’ in the Rain,” the U.S. premiere of “Baby Peggy: The Elephant in the Room,” a documentary by Vera Iwerebor about Diana Serra Cary’s life, and a tribute to Audrey Hepburn as part of TCM’s “Style in the Movies” celebration.

Diana Serra Cary wrote a great book in the '70s called "The Hollywood Posse," about the cowboys who went to Hollywood in the 'teens and '20s and worked on westerns, bringing a good deal of authenticity to them. One of them was her father and she tells their story. An amazing account.

Oh, and I still can't wrap my head around Marsha Hunt (94), Rhonda Fleming (90) and Peggy Cummins (86) all being in one place at one time. I didn't know Ms. Cummins (GUN CRAZY) was even still with us!

good to time to ask a question of tcm: what are the plans for restoration, leading to a long-awaited dvd of Raintree County – this has been a subject of much discussion, with no comment to date from tcm/warner

Good point Rodney–I linked to the wrong video. It's fixed now. Thanks for the comment.

It should be great fun… but note that the preview trailer included in this article is for the 1940 "Thief of Bagdad," with Conrad Veidt and Sabu. The film being shown at the festival is the 1924 "Thief of Bagdad," with Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. Both are very entertaining, but only one is silent and appropriate for live orchestra accompaniment.
