Ponsoldt's Sundance Hit 'Smashed' Heads to SPC, Stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul

Sony Pictures Classics is reportedly in final talks to acquire James Ponsoldt‘s sophomore feature “Smashed,” which premiered at Sundance. The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (“The Thing,” “Scott Pilgrim”) and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) as an alcoholic married couple, Kate and Charlie. When school teacher Kate decides to get sober (with help from a recovering alcoholic played by Oscar nominee Octavia Spencer), it forces her to confront the reality of her relationship with Charlie and the lies she’s been telling at work.

“Smashed” has earned stellar reviews so far. Variety calls it “effective and immersive,” and JoBlo says Winstead’s performance is a “tour-de-force.”

Produced by Jonathan Schwartz and Andrea Sperling, who produced “Like Crazy” and were honored at Sundance this year for their work on “Smashed” as well as “Nobody Walks” (Magnolia), the film was also produced by Jennifer Cochis.
