Steve McQueen Speaks Out On “Shame” Oscar Snub

Steve McQueen Speaks Out On "Shame" Oscar Snub

Shame director Steve McQueen is not happy wth the Oscars voters and in particular the fact that lead actor Michael Fassbender was not nominated for his lead role in the film. But McQueen says that because we're scaredy cats (But of course don't we all know that?)

According to McQueen: "In America they're too afraid of sex, that's why he wasn't nominated. if you look at the Best Actor list, you're saying 'Michael Fassbender isn't on the list'?'

And he went on "It's kind of crazy, but that's how it is. It's an American award, so let them have it."

Actually it was pretty obvious that Fassbender was never going to get an nomination from the beginning because of the controversial nature of the movie. .And if there's one thing Oscar voters DON'T like it's controversy.

I mean we're prudes here unlike them sex orgy luvin' furriners.

(Pardon me while I move to France)

It says a lot for McQueen that he was more concerned for his leading actor than for himself as director. Fassbender is usually the best part of any movie he's in. Maybe either McQueen or Fassbender will achieve a "delayed" or "make up" Oscar for 12 Years a Slave.

I wasn't surprised by the snub. It was a great performance and deserved to be recognized, but the Academy is afraid of controversy, real or imagined. http://www.thelettersproject.org

What is up. I am having problem posting.

Wait. Did no one see Matthias Schoenaerts in 'Bullhead'!? BEST performance by a male actor PERIOD. Blew me away! Now THAT was a snub. At least the film was nominated. A phenomenal piece of storytelling.

Forget about the subject of this article. I found misspellings here that should be discussed.

Yeah Oscar is just the American mainstream.

Hey what's up with this posting stuff. I can't get anything out there with indie wire calling it spam. Do I have respond in abbreviated text code to get stuff said. Like: wtf, sup w indiewire, ne1, some1 nos cuz idk?

This probably has less to do with the content of the film and more to do with the fact that Oscar voters can't tell good movies from bad ones. After all, these are the same people who gave Forrest Gump a Best Picture award in the same year that The Shawshank Redemption, Quiz Show, and Pulp Fiction came out.

The Academy doesn't do is "Change". Look at the nominees this year? The roles are pretty standard, time tested archetypes-some would say stereotypes-another discussion for another day. Andy Serkis should have been nominated for Best Actor, his depth of humanity & physicality, aided by what amounts to 21st Century Mask work, was stunning. But since his character was technically an animal & it was a big budget "popcorn" film, they dismissed it. Maybe if SHAME was silent & in B&W, they'd get some run LOL

I'm really disappointed it wasn't even nominated. It deserved to win or at least have a chance. I hope McQueen continues pushing the envelope and putting out more great work like this. He deserves any praise that comes his way.

It saddens me that Mr. McQueen cares about the Oscars. I care about the Oscars as much as I do the BET awards. Also, how could McQueen expect any love from the "big boys" so soon after his "outburst". Hell, they probably have him pegged as a "Spike Lee type" . TP will get a nom before McQueen.

Snub?! No snub, S & A had it wrong from the jump. Fools rush in where wise me tread not. That's right, some of the S & A crew was all up in Shame's behind, while waving pom-pom inviting others to take a walk on the wild side. Sergio, he who laughs last laughs best.
