Ultimate Oscar Talk: Why 'The Artist' and Streep Beat 'Hugo' and Davis

Well, it's over. Kris Tapley, Guy Lodge and I work over the results of the 84th Academy Awards. On Sunday, I was on the red carpet, backstage, at the Governor's Ball and the Weinsteins; Kris and I were both at the Spirit Awards lunch in Santa Monica on Saturday. We discuss the good ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" upset), the bad (Viola Davis was robbed!) and the ugly ("Rise of the Planet of the Apes" lost to "Hugo").

Here's the podcast. This is it until we reconvene at Cannes in May.

I must admit that I found both "THE ARTIST" and "HUGO" to be overrated. Can I say the same about "THE DESCENDANTS"? Not really. I haven't seen it yet.

As for your joy over "THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO" getting upset at the Oscars . . . let's just say I don't share your feelings.

I don't think Viola Davis was robbed. Meryl gave the best performance and was deserving. You certainly seem to be a politician in the way you are so wish=washy. Last time Meryl was nominated for Julie and Julia you were on her bandwagon and let the world know that Meryl should be given special consideration for her next nomination (The Iron Lady). And now you are all about poor Viola Davis. I think you are a waste of time.

Very interesting, biased discussion with good and bad points. Too bad Viola Davis wasn't nominated for Best Supporting Actress rather than Leading Actress. In my opinion, Meryl gave the best performance of the year. I am looking forward to seeing more versatility in Ms. Davis' roles rather than her ability to cry as in her Tony Award-winning performance in "Fences," or in "Doubt,' or in "The Help," or in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close." I agree an action film for her would be a bit of fresh air for her fans and audience-goers unfamiliar with her work. Bottom line: I enjoyed your discussion and viewpoints whether I agree with you or not.

Thanks for the excellent seasonal coverage guys!

A couple of things:

1) I predicted two weeks ago that Streep would get the Oscar instead of Davis. She was simply due another one and Davis will have another shot again. Maybe next year with Won't Back Down which the studio pushed back until late Sept. They must smell Oscar bait

2) Octavia Spencer got what I call the "compensation" Oscar which voters like to give to actors who aren't going to have leading man or woman careers. In other words, this is about as good as it's going to get for her. There have been many others. (Forest Whitaker, Adrian Brody, Mo'Nique, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, F. Murray Abraham (remember him?), etc. Some like Hoffman and Whitaker have great and busy careers as character actors in supporting roles, but they're not leading men material except for the occasional "quirky" leading role in a low budget film

3) The Artist is along with The Descendants and Hugo, is one of the OVERrated films of the year. Want to see a really good silent film? How about Metropolis, Wings, City Lights for example. You know a film actually made during the time of silent movies that has something with substance. Not some slight, boring trifle like The Artist

4) THANK GOD for Sasha Baron Cohen! And Seacrest totally deserved it and then some. Is there anyone who can stand his empty slick phoniness?
