Academy Sets 2013 Oscar Date; Nominations Pushed Up a Week

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has set the dates for the 2013 Oscar nominations announcement and subsequent award ceremony.

The awards will take place on Sunday, February 24th, which is in line with recent years as being the fourth Sunday in February. However, the nomination announcement will take place on Tuesday, January 15th, which is a week earlier than than past years (they usually occur on the 4th Tuesday in January and will now occur on the 3rd).

This suggestively will push the as-yet-unannounced voting deadlines to earlier dates as well, and is perhaps part of a longer term plan to push up the actual ceremony. It also means there will be an extra week between the nominations and the ceremony.

The Academy will certainly have to lower their nose to the general public’s level if they want to get their audience back. The awards have just really gone downhill the past few years and this year’s nominations in particular were completely out of touch with what people like. If you thought the picks for the show were as stuffy as I did, check out my Top 10 Movies of 2011 at where you won’t read about a single Best Picture nominee but rather the pictures which the Oscars snubbed.
