Antoine Fuqua In Talks To Direct Delayed Film Adaptation of TV Fox Series “24”

Antoine Fuqua In Talks To Direct Delayed Film Adaptation of TV Fox Series "24"

Deadline released a report today regarding the circumstances behind the delay of the film adaptation of the Fox TV series 24, which stars Kiefer Sutherland as Counter Terrorist Unit agent Jack Bauer.

The project hasn’t been greenlit and Antoine Fuqua has not been confirmed, although the scoop is that Fuqua is in talks to direct.

20th Century Fox doesn’t seem to be going forward with the project this year, although production was originally slated for the end of March. Among the reasons cited in an update sent a few hours later are budget conflicts, along with Sutherland’s $1 million dollar offer to reprise the TV role on the big screen. According to the report, insiders speculated that Sutherland should have gotten at least $2 million, although that would be $3 million less than the original negotiations of $5 million.

Also, Fox was trying to make the film on a $30 million budget, but the filmmakers wanted to raise that amount to $45 million, then to $60 million. When the studio’s proposal was addressed this week, they deemed the seven-week prep time too time constraining. Besides, Fuqua, Sutherland and Imagine Studios would reap 25% of the proceeds after break-even.

Until the monetary situation gets settled, it doesn’t look like Fox is moving forward with the highly anticipated 24.

I’ve never watched the series, so there’s really no anticipation here. What about you?

I've seen ALL OF '24' and it is a great series. "Jack Bauer" is a great character; more complex than the typical law enforcement/spy/agent/special unit/probably ex-marine delta force/etc. in my opinion. Even the little mini-series or two-hour movie of '24' after the series ended, served and served nicely. Some seasons were stronger than others, sure, but I'd have to say season 1 and 2 was and is my favorite. Jack had great chemistry with David Palmer and Mrs. Palmer, the President's wife. Season 4 was also great. Some great acting from the the next President who turns out to be not so 'noble' after all…but I won't spoil. I loved this show. And I would love to see a movie…they just have to make sure that the plot is gooooooooooood, no great! No easy guesses. No easy makes with whose the villain and whose the good guys, etc.

Fuqua is a big hit or miss director, so it's really hard to get excited for anything he's attached to, although I'm one of the few who liked "Brooklyn's Finest".

Loved the series, Fuqua's work and what is 24 without Kiefer. Hope it gets made.

Antoine Fuqua and Kiefer Sutherland. I'm just saying…
45-60 mil isn't actually that much for a high concept action thriller like a 24 feature could be.

45 to 60 million for what? Explosions? The show is a joke. They pretty much make it up as they go along. They can do a movie that way for a lot less than 60 million.
