It’s been about 2 years since I first learned of an NWA biopic being in development; it is happening, if you weren’t already aware. And based on Sway’s interview with Ice Cube (who’s apparently spearheading the project) below, it’s just a matter of when; or as he states, it’s one of his pet projects that he’d like to see realized in the next year or two.
He says that the project is actually much further along than the Friday sequel that’s probably gotten a lot more public attention; the script is done (he says it’s “tight”), and right now they’re hunting for the right director.
At various points, John Singleton, F. Gary Gray, Craig Brewer, and Peter Berg have all been on that short list to direct. Cube doesn’t name any new names this time though.
And you’ll recall that both Eazy E’s son and daughter claimed that they were either in the running, or would be the best fits to play their father in the movie; the son previously said that there was a “high probability” that he’d play the part; the daughter just wants her shot.
When asked about all of that, Cube replied, stating that no promises have been made to anyone regarding casting and everyone is going ot have to earn whatever role is given to them, whether actors or children of the real-life men of NWA who want to play their fathers.
Cube also said that none of the real members of NWA will be in the film; not even in cameos apparently.
