Iconic Singer-Actress Doris Day Honored with TCM Programming Spotlight, Warner DVD Box Set, Sony CD Compilation

Que sera sera!

Turner Classic Movies, Sony Masterworks and Warner Home Video are teaming up on a multi-tiered celebration of singer-actress Doris Day timed to coincide with her 89th birthday on April 3. The celebration includes a DVD box set of 4 titles, a new CD set with a collection of 31 songs and a five-night salute on TCM.

Warner’s DVD box set “TCM Greatest Classic Legends: Doris Day” includes star-making sparkling shipboard musical “Romance on the High Seas” (1948), sharp-shooting western musical “Calamity Jane” (1953), Ruth Etting biopic “Love Me or Leave Me” (1955) and domestic comedy “Please Don’t Eat the Daisies” (1960).

TCM’s “Star of the Month: Doris Day” five-night programming from April 2 – 6 includes 28 films, spanning “Romance on the High Seas” to her mid-’60s romantic comedies.

Day is still one of the biggest box office performers of all time, and has starred onscreen with Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Jack Lemmon, David Niven and Rock Hudson. For her equally impressive singing career (more than two dozen albums, Billboard chart success and a 1957 Best Original Song Oscar win for her trademark tune “Que Sera Sera”), Day received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2008. Of the new Sony CD set — which she curated — Day said, “I sang hundreds of songs, but because I was so busy singing, I rarely had the time to be involved in the compilation of the albums. So in this collection are some of my favorites, ones that I loved singing.”

Day was honored by the LA Film Critics earlier this year, in a memorable one-way Skype session (she could see the audience, but the audience could only hear her voice) while her “Send Me No Flowers” director Norman Jewison paid her tribute. Uggie the dog was also in attendance — Day is a dog lover and has been a passionate animal rights activist for decades.

Love, love, love her. I wanted to be an interior decorator and marry a guy as good looking as Rock. What talent! Was there anything she couldn't do and sang with so much soul ! There's no movie I haven't seen at least four or five times and can probably name all the leading men and the movie. God bless you 'Clara' ; ) !

Hmm, the jury's still out on that one. IMDB lists her birthday as 1924, while Wikipedia lists it as 1923, and other websites speculate that her birth year could be as early as 1922.

Every birthdate I've seen listed for Doris Day says April 3, 1924, which will make her next birthday her 88th, not her 89th.
