Idris Elba Will Play Imhotep & Brilliant Astronomer In New Adventure TV Miniseries “Ascension”

Idris Elba Will Play Imhotep & Brilliant Astronomer In New Adventure TV Miniseries "Ascension"

On the heels of the immense commercial and critical success of Luther, Idris Elba has set up a new TV project – an adventure/thriller minio-series titled Ascension.

Elba has teamed with producer Vivek J. Tiwary and writer Warren Ellis for the new series which revolves around “the history and future of astronomy and mankind’s impulse for the stars, says Deadline. The story is based on an original idea by Tiwary and his wife, Dr. Tracy Dennis-Tiwary.

Elba, who will also act as exec producer, will play two leads in the project – the Egyptian polymath Imhotep in 3000 B.C., and a brilliant astronomer in the near future.

Ellis, whose most recent credit was penning the screenplay for the 2010 graphic novel adaptation of Red, is writing the script for Ascension, which is currently being shopped to British TV networks; I’d imagine, given Idris’ success with Luther for the BBC, Ascension should get lots of looks across the pond. Although I’m surprised they aren’t shopping it around networks here in the USA.

But this is good for Idris; I love how he continues to take control of his career, just as he did with the feature film Legacy (some of his best work, IMHO), and the TV series Luther; he’s being very proactive behind the camera, setting himself up with lead roles in ambitious projects, while maintaining relevance with supporting roles in big budget studio films. I’d say it’s only a matter of time before the two worlds collide.

I will be seeing this when it comes out!!!!! Idris Elba is a far better actor than Matthew McConnaughey

Melissa Danielle

I hope this show's production stays out of the US. When was the last time the US had a sustainable series with a black made lead?

I'll wait.

Ra Sudi

MashaAllah !!!!!!!!!!

thats wasup…. I will be checking this out, if it doesnt come to the USA then will be coppin the DVD even if it means extra shipping cost

oh and shoutout to Pharrell for that ELLE magazine (UK) cover…peace to the "Olmecs" and the Moors (who nowadays think they are 'Negroes')

I've always has mad respect for the Brother! I hope he continues to remain relevant develop and excel in his craft. Imhotep was the father of medicine. Not the greeks. Aristotle, socrates and many others greeks have been credited for African Egyptian achievements, Smh. They only invaded Africa/Egypt and stole doctrines from the library of Alexandria. Time to redirect the focus on us and our African people. Idris knows this. There is no such thing as greek philosophy only stolen Egyptian philosophy. Time to eradicate buffoonery tv dramas and focus on our real authentic African history and make more films based on them.

Egyptian whitewasher Zahi Hawass, will crap his pants. Would it be too much to ask to have a black female love interest, too?

Its great to see black ancient Egyptians because that is what they were. (See below)

This sounds great. I love these type of settings and characters and such. Bring it.

Can't wait to check this out, Elba is a great actor, gonna see Prometheus too.

Black Egyptian? Egyptian period. Lets avoid the western labeling which puts many of us in a cultural segregated box.

Lets hope its not blacked out through whitewash, a black cast doesnt neccessitate the truth of Black/Afrikan people. I trust Idris will come through for us without having to sell us downstream!!

Black Egyptians on screen..finally!! Haven't seen any since MJ's "Remember the Time" video. Idris is the mutha-effin man!

This sounds great. Its about time we see Black ancient Egyptian in sci-fi and on tv. I guess they are not shopping it here because hollywood would not buy the black ancient egyptian thing and they would want to change or buy it and not produce it till they re-wrote it.

I agree LEGACY was well done and executed by a talented and gifted artist. I am quite sure Idris will do justice in telling a story, that is based on history, past and present…Spiritually speaking, I hope that it is Inner-taining, as this too could be a Legacy.

Like it!

Let's see. Sci-fi –check. A Black Ancient Egyptian on screen –check. Idris Elba -check. And a very good graphic novelist/screenwriter –check. I will definitely be checking this one out.

Afrocentric sci/fi,huuummm????, maybe, just maybe this will inch him closer to considering producing one of Octavia Butler's novels;-)? aint nothin wrong with wishful thinking, if all that there is;-)

Idris Elba and Warren Ellis?!! This project just went to the top of my "much anticipated" column.
