Naomie Harris In Talks To Play Winnie Mandela Opposite Idris Elba’s Nelson Mandela In Biopic

Naomie Harris In Talks To Play Winnie Mandela Opposite Idris Elba's Nelson Mandela In Biopic

Naomie Harris is reportedly “in talks” to star as Winnie Mandela opposite Idris Elba’s as Nelson Mandela in the new biopic announced a few weeks ago.

Justin Chadwick in also said to be in advanced talks to direct the film which will be based on Long Walk to Freedom – the autobiographical work written by Nelson Mandela himself, which highlights his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison.

According to Screen Daily, the project will have an “epic sweep,” from a script written by Gladiator, Shadowlands and Les Miserables writer William Nicholson, and is likely to shoot in South Africa in May.

By the way, director Chadwick and Harris have worked before in the 2010 drama The First Grader about a Kenyan villager and ex Mau Mau freedom fighter.

Of course, if/when this finally is complete, comparisons to the Jennifer Hudson/Terence Howard Winnie Mandela biopic are bound to happen; although this one with Elba, Harris, Chadwick and screenwriter Nicholson certainly has more promise.

Seems like a project to watch out for. Not too sure about idris though but we shall see

Naomie is quite a versatile actress whose talent I've appreciated since the film adaptation of White Teeth. Of the two pics, this one with Idris Elba and Harris is the film I look forward to seeing.

The Idris Elba/Naomi Harris pairing feels much stronger than the Jennifer Hudson/Terrance Howard pairing. Been a fan of Harris since 28 Days Later.

I doubt that the Jennifer Hudson/Terence Howard Winnie Mandela biopic will ever see a wide release.

This is very interesting casting call by the producers. Naomie is certainly one of the most intelligent actresses around with a great screen charisma and an understated hard edge as would be required to play a young Winnie. We would like to see this happen as this makes the choice of Idris seem much better to us now. Also it would be timely to have Idris play against a much better actress than he has in the past. Sparks may fly!

Either way its a sign that the producers have set their stall out to make something important.
