Sony Pictures Classics Takes Ponsoldt's 'Smashed,' Starring Winstead, Paul & Oscar-Winner Spencer

Sony Pictures Classics has taken worldwide rights for James Ponsoldt’s “Smashed” after its Sundance debut. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aaron Paul Paul and Best Supporting Actress winner Octavia Spencer lead a sprawling cast including Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and Mary Kay Place.

Spencer plays a recovering alcoholic who helps Winstead’s character get sober. Here’s more on her future projects and awards season trail. She has also signed on for South Korean director Joon-ho Bong’s thriller “Snow Piercer” (with Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt and Ewan Bremner) and Diablo Cody’s untitled comedy (currently shooting with Holly Hunter, Russell Brand, Julianne Hough and Nick Offerman). She is also linked to “The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife” and “Lost on Purpose,” both in various stages of production.

The “Smashed” synopsis below. The film is currently 100% Fresh on Tomatometer:

Kate and Charlie (Winstead and Paul) like to have a good time. Their marriage thrives on a shared fondness for music, laughter…and getting smashed. When Kate’s partying spirals into hard-core asocial behavior, compromising her job as an elementary schoolteacher, something’s got to give. But change isn’t exactly a cakewalk. Sobriety means she will have to confront the lies she’s been spinning at work, her troubling relationship with her mother, and the nature of her bond with Charlie.

The film is produced by “Like Crazy”‘s Jonathan Schwartz and Andrea Sperling (Super Crispy Entertainment), who were the recipients of Sundance’s Excellence in Independent Film Producing award. Jennifer Cochis also produced, while Audrey and Zygi Wilf served as exec producers.
