More and more films premiere on Video on Demand — if they don’t simply bypass a theatrical release altogether. Because VOD reviews are often scarce and hard to find, Criticwire created VODetails, a recurring column to help you figure out whether a new VOD release is worth your hard-earned dollar. This time we’re looking at “ATM,” a horror thriller about some wayward souls trapped in an ATM vestibule by a mysterious killer.
Director: David Brooks
Writer: Chris Sparling
Cast: Brian Geraghty, Josh Peck, Alice Eve
Official Synopsis: “After leaving their company Christmas Party together, David Hargrove (Geraghty) and Emily Brandt’s (Eve) impromptu first date takes an unexpected turn when their coworker, Corey (Peck) , asks them to make a late-night stop at an ATM. Pulling into a desolate parking lot, Corey gets out to get cash, what should be a routine transaction turns into a desperate struggle for survival when an unknown man appears outside blocking their exit. With the wintry temperatures dipping below freezing, and the morning sunrise still hours away, they have no choice but to play the man’s deadly game of cat-and-mouse.”
“If they gave out an Oscar for Best Performance as a Jerk, then Josh Peck would get nominated for this movie. It’s actually quite something to see.”
“There’s enough satisfying horror beats in the film to keep it from being a total loss.”
Michelle Barkley, Horror Happy Hour:
“The actions of the killer… and the idiotic choices of the characters are unforgivable. The atmosphere, on the other hand, [is] perfect.”
“Lacks the fluidity of ‘Buried.'”
“The whole film was very formulaic and uninspired.”
“ATM” is now available on VOD and iTunes.
