Watch: First Teaser For David Cronenberg's 'Cosmopolis' With Twilight Star Robert Pattinson Is Seriously Impressive

After the rather staid costume drama of “A Dangerous Method,” a film that failed to embrace the kink promised in the premise of an sado-masochistic affair between Jung and a former patient, many started to wonder: had David Cronenberg gone soft? The filmmaker has been steadily moving into more mainstream territory, but generally managed to keep a little of the transgressiveness that made his name with films from “The Brood” to “Crash.” But with the Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender drama? Not so much.

Well it appears that that was only a short-term issue: the teaser trailer for Cronenberg’s next film, an adaptation of Don DeLillo‘s novel “Cosmopolis,” has arrived, and it looks like classic Cronenberg stuff. Following a twentysomething billionaire, who fears he’s going to be murdered, as he travels through Manhattan in a limo on the worst traffic day in record, the film’s been getting more attention than the filmmaker’s used to, seeing as it’s toplined by “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson, who for certain demographics is one of the biggest heartthrobs to hit the big screen in a long time. But that attention doesn’t seem to have made Cronenberg water things down — the brief, French-subtitled clip (which seems a little reminiscent of “Enter The Void” in its neon-inflected marketing) has sex, violence, body horror and bizarre images.

It looks, to be frank, absolutely brilliant, and it’s certainly dampened any doubts we might have had for the time being. And R-Patz? Damned if he doesn’t look, in the very brief glimpses, right at home. Is it possible that all the doubters are about to be proved wrong with a terrific performance? That being said, we’d said the same about “Bel Ami,” and that did not turn out well... All signs point to a Cannes premiere for the film, which will open in France on May 23rd: there’s no U.S. distributor or release date just yet, but it can’t be too far away. Update: C7nema has a new international poster for the film which we’ve added below. [Twitch]

Robert Pattinson is good in Remember Me, he's good in WFE and yeah he's good as playing the super-weird vampire in the Twilight films as well, and he's acting differently in all three. Just from the first line in this trailer I can already tell he's acting very differently again. He's a damn good actor, I know his lines in Twilight are super shallow but his performances have always been very solid.

Cronenberg is one of my favorites and this looks great. Still not sold on Pattinson. I'm not hating because of Twlight, I just haven't found him to be very good in anything I saw him in. But, I will give him a chance and I hope he and the movie do well.

Looks pretty good, but let's be honest, it could also be complete garbage. Trailer barely showed us anything. It does look like Cronenberg is going back to his bodily forms and fluids days, which is something to be excited about. Pattinson on the other hand, again, what did we see that we can honestly say is "seriously impressive"? Let's hope.

Cronenberg didn't go anywhere, but this looks FUCKING AWESOME! Super stoked on this.

WAS THAT A DINOSAUR? If it has CGI dinosaurs it must be the greatest movie ever made. So transgressive. DID YOU SEE THE DINOSAUR. Why is the headline not about the Dinosaur?????

this looks like the best film pattinsons ever done. i 2nd that it looks like classic cronenberg.

Looks great, but what's the Cronenberg is back nonsense? I wasn't a big fan of A Dangerous Method but it's far from bad. Otherwise he's been on a spectacular roll for the last decade or more.

Nice..this is looking really good. I'm glad Robert Pattinson is getting away from his 'norm' (twilight..) to do something challenging. Let's hope it works out well!
I'm really excited to see this Cronenberg film.

it looks really good, a real great Cronenberg. other than that, people should forgive one day Rob Pattinson to have participated in this absolute shit that's Twilight! give him a chance!

What an exciting year for movies 2012 is going to be.

to all the guys who have their face buried between Jennifer Lawrence legs….we love our Rob Pattinson…He has what you do not have…Intelligence, Intensity, Presence, Humanity , he is humble and awkward , kind and funny and a great actor right on the heels of deNiro , Brando , Pacino……

Cannes here we come!

Robert-dull-faced-Pattinson has no act. He RUINS 2 good movies. He is nothing but a beautiful face, which we can find a lot in hollywood. Just show some of his naked scenes then his fans call him a good actor. He should go back to London and sing in a bar.

lol at all these Twilight fans trying to pass off as serious film fans.

I'm unsure how a few nanosecond flashes of random bloody images translate into something brilliant, but whatever, that's what the Playlist does…

Holy moly i know it's just a short trailer but this looks really awesome. Cronenberg and DeLillo, of course it's a good combination. And have to give Robert Pattinson credit, even in those 30 seconds he comes across like a great performer, easily shredding away the Twilight stuff

Robert Pattinson's accent could use work.

Cronenberg never left.

What is that accent? Cronenberg is trolling.

Whoaa, It looks really really cool!

Roll on the 23rd May 2112, this film look's great!!!!

this looks really promising. seems cronenberg found his mojo again. no trace of twilight on pattinson. can't wait.

WOW! looks like Cronenberg is back! R-pattz seems to fitting as well… who knows he might surprise us! definitely gonna watch this!
